Getting Pissed
« on: November 19, 2006, 05:47:00 PM »

I have a softmodded v1.6 Xbox and I'm trying to put a 40GB hard drive in it, but can't find anything that actually works.  I softmodded the stock hard drive using XboxHDM and FDURE 3.0.  I FTP'd into my Xbox and copied the C and E drives and the EEPROM to my computer into the respective folders into the xboxhdm/linux folder.  How do I set up my new, completely blank 40GB hard drive to be used in my Xbox?  I won't be using XBL with the 40GB hard drive either.

The directions I found were these:
1) burn the ISO image CD after making sure all the necessary files were on the computer within the xboxhdm folder.  Put the CD in the computer's CD-drve and shutdown.  Replace the hard drive with the blank one to be used for the Xbox.
2) When xboxhdm loads up choose option 1, then when it's loadedtype "xboxhd"
3) Choose option 1 again to prepare xbox hard drive from scratch.  Answer Yes to all the questions and when it's finished hit reboot.
4) When xboxhdm comes up choose option 3, and then once that's loaded type "lockhd -a"

Problem is when I do step 2 it says that there are no xbox drives on the hard drive; shutdown, replace drive, and reboot.  I can never get to the "prepare Xbox hard drive from scratch" part cuz it's a blank hard drive.  I've looked at so many different things and am getting really frustrated cuz I'm not finding anything to help.

Thanks in advance,

The Brain is right.  Put your 40gb hard drive and try to format with dos or something to see if it works.  If your computer can detect it, xboxhdm can detect it too.

Yes, when connected as a slave drive in my computer, Partition Magic detected it and was able to format it as well, but which format does it need to be in to be used for the Xbox?  NTFS, FAT32, or what?

This is the hard drive I'm trying to use.

Format using FAT32

Xbox Hard Drive Compatibility List : http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com
There seems to verying results tho..

You could try using other apps like HDD Unlock wizard, xhdprepa13, unlockx
There a couple of tuts/how to's  to choose from..

As quoted from the HOW TO.TXT (xboxhdm_v1.9)

This explains how to build a burnable iso from this distribution.
For information on howto use the xbox HD builder script read the readme.txt
in the linux directory.

The xbox HD builder script (xboxhd) needs the xbox C-, and E-drive files.
You can supply the script with these files in two ways :
You can either :
- burn a seperate CDROM with two folders containing the
xbox C-, and E-drive respectively, or
- Put the xbox C- and E-drive files in the C and E folders
in linux directory before making the burnable iso.

BUILDING THE ISO.
In windows upon a 'Command prompt' and navigate to this directory.
Run the following command :
> make-iso-win.bat

In linux navigate to this directory and execute :
> make-iso-lin.sh

This should produce a file called linux.iso that you must now burn
to blank CDROM. It's important that you burn this raw image and don't
create a Data CDROM containing this image...

UNLOCK/LOCK TOOLS.
If you need to lock or unlock xbox HD's use also have two options :

1) Boot the CDROM an choose option 3) at the boot prompt. This will
bring you to a linux prompt with locking/unlocking tools.
These tools are generating the HDD password automatically and it's
therefore required that you supply the eeprom of the xbox that the HDD
is from. You can include the eeprom in the xboxhmd/linux/eeprom directory
(named eeprom.bin) or have it ready on a floppy disk.
type : unlockhd to run the unlock utility.
type : lockhd to run the locking utility. The eeprom supplied password
will be set and a Master Password 'XBOXSCENE'. You can use this to unlock
the HDD if you loose the eeprom password you your eeprom gets lost.
Boot the xboxhdm to DOS (option 4) and run the atapwd tools to unlock
   using Master passwords.

2) Boot the CDROM an choose option 4) at the boot prompt. This will
bring you to a DOS prompt with the unlockx, hdlock, hdunlock, hddisabl
utilities. However as the CDROM is read-only on log files can be saved
so you will be prompted the used passwd when a HD is locked. Write this
down in case the passwd later turns out to be incorrect. You can also insert
a fat-formatted floppy and run the save-logs command to save the used passwd's
   onto floppy

3) Boot the xboxhdm CD using option 1). Enter the xboxhd tool by typing xboxhd and
pushing ENTER. Choose the "Generate HDD password" option and afterwards
run the "Make DOS floppy with locking tools" option.
Reboot using this floppy and use the unlockhd and lockhd tools.

Good luck..

I don't have a floppy drive on my computer, just a CD-ROM drive and a CD/DVD burner.  Is that a problem?

it´s better to have a floppy just if "unlock/lock" dosen´t work..
beacuse if you cant lock it with the CD, you disconnect the HDD
boot the floppy with the tools, connect the HDD and lock/unlock it.

Wow, I feel soooo stupid and noobish.  The reason I kept getting the "There are no drives on the primary master" message thing was because the jumper settings on the hard drive were still set to slave instead of cable select.

So I did everything, went thru all the steps in making it as an Xbox hard drive, and when I went to go lock it I discovered that my exact model of hard drive isn't capable of locking.  So now I have an extra 40GB hard drive that I can't use  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
