I want to make my own video skins and have a few ideas. I've read Jezz_X's tut for making wmv but how can I get video from a dvd movie and convert it to wmv? Not the whole thing of course just about 5 to 10 seconds. I got no idea how to, I guess I'm just hoping that some of you pro skinners have done it it and can tell me where to start? Any help would be great! <

you need a dvd ripper, and virtual dub. I use smart ripper to rip the dvd files to my hard drive, the use virtual dub to edit the video that I want to use.

then use wm9 encoder to convert to wm8.

smack_ramen I downloaded Virtual Dub but it wont let me open a DVD that I've copied to my harddrive (the movies are in .VOB). What now? <

did you decrypt them ? or just copy the files over. By default all the files on the dvd disc are encrypted you just can't copy a file over you need to use a ripper to decrypt it <

Man get with the times smart ripper is so out dated I suggest you try
DVD Decrypter
Its 1000 times better than smart ripper

Man I always use DVD Decrypter! When I copy the DVD I need to extract it as an MPEG?

Woops just realised that wasnt the problem. I should be able to edit DVD's with VirtualDub as long as I have decryted them right? They would still be .VOB's wouldnt they? And when i do edit them in VirtualDub, what do I save my project as? Sorry for all these lame-ass questions!

Well if you got a lot and I mean a lot of harddisk space I suggest you save the part you want as an Uncompressed avi file and then convert it to wmv with another tool. But if you are short of HD Space download a DV codec or a mjpeg codec and save it in that format. though each time you recompress it you lose more quality <

hi dude,

goto doom9.net

then download

smart ripper
virtualdubMOD (opens vobs mpg2 etc)

this will help you get a nice avi file.

putin your dvd.
load smart ripper.
itwillauto select your movie (smart huh?)
makesure seperate elementery streams are selectedandrip tomaxsize vob file i use 9GB.
when done, open in virtualdub. use the in and out markers to set start and end. then crop it. then click on video compression, then select divx for larger files orif you are brave or have a tb server (like me) you can use uncompressed. one done save as avi, wait, and wait.

there you gothats it really.

sorry about the grammer my keyboard on thispc is crap.
also this is out of my memory it should workbut you might have to dig for some ofthe options, aint used windows forsome time.

Hey thanks for the sugestions guys, I still have a problem. I copied a DVD using DVD Decrypter then used TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 to convert the DVD to an .mpg file. After that I used TMPGEnc to slice some parts off that I wanted for a skin. Once I had them (2 small files) I re-encoded them to .wmv8 files following Jezz_X's great guide. I ftp'd them to my xbox and used UnleashX's file explorer to play to see how they came out. Quality wise they look spot-on, the problem is they pause for a few seconds at the start and again at the end. I think its caused by TMPGEnc. Any ideas? <

I should have mentioned before, when I cut a piece out of an .mpg file and before I convert to .wmv, if I play the small .mpg I made it pauses at the start and again at the end. Please help Jezz_X!

Go to sourceforge.net and search for and download a program called VirtualDubMod and use it to cut the vob files after learning how to use it of coarse <
