I figured I would re-post some research I did a little while back...

611 DVD Players support DVDRW   70%  
264 DVD Players do not support DVDRW   30%

613 DVD Players support DVDPLUSR   83%  
130 DVD Players do not support DVDPLUSR   17%  
743 DVD Players tested (1322 DVD Players are not tested).

605 DVD Players support DVDPLUSRW   70%  
257 DVD Players do not support DVDPLUSRW   30%  
862 DVD Players tested (1203 DVD Players are not tested).

So...  88% of DVD set top player play DVD-R... and that from a larger sample than the DVD+R at 83% based on a 25% smaller sample...  DVD-R still the performance leader...

As for the RW camps.. good news.. reletively equal performance.

We'll see how these numbers change... but seeing as how DVD-R was designed early on to have the best compatibility.. with both current and legacy set top players... I don't expect to see a reversal of the current trend.

Is DVD+R an excellent format... yes!  Is DVD-R a better format than DVD+R?  Most definitely!

So lets say i wanted to start collecting episodes of the simpsons, would i want to get a +RW recorder so i could do the whole adding to the menu? or does it not work like that... lemme maybe explain it better..... lets say i got a episode of the simpsons and burned it to a +RW, then i downloaded another episode, and burned it on there too, would it have a menu with both episodes? and if so, would -rw do that too?
