Philips Drive Tweak Tutorial
« on: December 31, 2002, 04:14:00 PM »

Here is a link to a tutorial I wrote to get my XBOX Philips drive to read my low cost DVD+R media and my DVD+RW media. I'm also able to read some CD-R brand now !

Use at your own risk !

Not bad, but better would have been using a multimeter to get the ohm readings at the start, and what setting you ended up with. It eliminates the need to mark it with a pen, and is far more accurate, that way; bear in mind, there is also a danger of burning out the laser if the ohms are set too low (which increases power to the laser) so it's nice to see how far it ends up getting adjusted.

Yeah I know, but to get access to the pot pins with standard multimeter probe it's very tricky, you have to remove the tray, etc...

So I guess this way is better to most people, and not everybody got a multimeter.

Well, A torx screwdriver, a Philips (!!!) screwdriver and a little precision screwdriver should do the job.

Be carefull with the Pot, they are not very strong !

and a Multimeter.  A cheap 5$ one from HOME DEPOT will do nicely!

Anyone have the original ohmage on the pots?  I tweaked the wrong one on accident and hadn't marked that one.  I read that it was 1Kohm, but my marked one shows 420ohms when put back to it's original spot...

Thanks for any help.

Damn I just burn my Philips sad.gif(( tooo bad I didn't mark the original position of the pot, now when I insert any CD/DVD (even originals) the reader starts spinning and in 3-4 sec it stops. It's not loudy, but still I can't manage to make it work! Any suggestions before buying a new DVD for my X?

People, be very carefull when you're doing this...

MARK THE ORIGINAL POSITION OF THE POT !

And remember to turn the pot little by little and test reading of your media at each movement...

I  will try to post the right ohmage in the next days to hopefully help you to get your phillips up and running.

I tried to tweak my 1.1 Xboxes Philips drive, too. I turned the screw for about 60°, and afterwards it was able to read some CDRs. So, I thought I could improve it even more, and turned to 90°. Then it couldn´t read the CDRs any more. Turned the screw back to 60°, but it still couldn´t read CDR.
Has somebody an explantion for the behavior?
The drive seems not to be damaged, because it´s still able to read CDRW.

Thanks MOE, I wait for the ohmage measurement. I think there's no way to burn the reader, the pots are surely limited. But without the right value we can't do anything. there is a method to measure the right ohmage without dismounting the tray, reply me if you want some help for how to. The Pioneer "solution" can replace the philips reader also for original games , dvd, cdr???
