TOKYO and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) and NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA - News) today announced that the companies have been collaborating on bringing advanced graphics technology and computer entertainment technology to SCEI's highly anticipated next-generation computer entertainment system. This collaboration is made under a broad, multi-year, royalty-bearing agreement. The powerful custom GPU will be the graphics and image processing foundation for a broad range of applications from computer entertainment to broadband applications. The agreement will encompass future Sony digital consumer electronics products.

"In the future, the experience of computer entertainment systems and broadband-ready PCs will be fused together to generate and transfer multi-streams of rich content simultaneously. "Our collaboration includes not only the chip development but also a variety of graphics development tools and middleware, essential for efficient content creation."

"We are thrilled to partner with Sony Computer Entertainment to build what will certainly be one of the most important computer entertainment and digital media platforms of the twenty-first century," added Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO, NVIDIA. "Over the past two years NVIDIA has worked closely with Sony Computer Entertainment on their next-generation computer entertainment system. In parallel, we have been designing our next-generation GeForce GPU. The combination of the revolutionary Cell processor and NVIDIA's graphics technologies will enable the creation of breathtaking imagery that will surprise and captivate consumers."

The custom GPU will be manufactured at Sony Group's Nagasaki Fab2 as well as OTSS (joint fabrication facility of Toshiba and Sony).

Note:

"Cell" is the code-name for an advanced microprocessor under development by IBM, Toshiba and Sony Group.

It's quite clear now that the Xbox2 will be a DirectX based gaming machine with a PowerPC based CPU and an ATI GPU, and the PS3 will be an OpenGL based gaming machine with a PowerPC based CPU and an Nvidia GPU.

just like sony shot themselves in the foot by letting the xbox come out with superior technology but a year later?

when parent shop for xmas presents they are looking at whats in stores now, not whats gonan be in stores next year, if xb2 comes out first it will get a big market share, and if you buy an xb2 for 300-400 dollars in 2005 you probably arent gonna buy a ps3 for the same price in 2006

sony already had a huge gamebase and following from the ps1.
people could associate with ps2 most people didnt care about xbox then.
it remains to be seen if these same people hold out for ps3, even now ps2s are still flying off the shelves.
dont get me wrong i love xbox but ive just got a feeling this same strategy wont work for xbox.

i hope im wrong...

I doubt that happens. That would require a Xbox 2 release before May. (thats the latest EA has ever let a Madden game ship out before..)
