Cell Cpu Photo!

IBM has released a photo of their prototype blade server motherboard featuring 2 Cell processors; the same processor used in the PS3. The 2 cell chips are on the left (big white squares).

Yer is it true that the Cell CPU is really designed for multi cpu configurations but the only closest fastest component in the PS3 near the Cell CPU is the RSX GPU so they are tightly linked together? Maybe they should have put two CPU's in the PS3 for that high price tag.

From what I hear the Cell has issues with Vertex shaders so the RSX is there to pick up the slack (in other words they compliment each other quite well). So two Cells just wouldn't be a good idea.

I could be completely wrong on that. So anybody in the know is welcome to correct me smile.gif

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cell and the RSX bound together in some weird bus-sharing relationship. The PS2's CPU can not operate without the Graphics Synthesizer (or at least without some re-engineering).

The Cell seems to be about the same size as the current EE+GS playstation 2 chip.

Its very possible they could be using the same exact packaging to improve manufacturing costs. If anyone has ever seen the EE+GS chip it's pretty generous in size. I've got an EE+GS chip that I can use to directly compare when this thing rolls out.

(For those who don't know, the EE+GS chip is the chip found in the PS2 that contains the Emotion Engine processor and the Graphics Synthesizer )

Yeah their naming conventions are based on retarded PR BS. It is essentially just a CPU and GPU smile.gif
