Linux And Multimedia?

I know its a little early to ask a question like this but I noticed already that the playstation 3 does not have support for divx and other likewise codecs... My question is with the "said" ability to run linux on the console and to also run applications on the console wouldnt that allow us to stream and save content directly on the system itself instead of having to convert?

It should be able to do anything that typical linux PC can do.

If you can even get linux to install and if you can even install a media player in said linux, then yeah, you should be able to play some of those videos.  However, most people who have actually done all this will tell you the results are very mixed.  Low res movies run pretty well, but most of the high def stuff skips a lot.  Some stuff won't run full screen, and some that do skip a lot, even the low res stuff.  Its hit or miss it seems.  Wish Sony wouldn't restrict linux to so little ram and allow access to the RSX.
