Double check on your secondary error code.  Just asking.  There is a huge difference in a 1 RROD and a secondary error code of 0001.

Please make certain which you have

Once someone I was helping, thought they had a 0002.  But really had a 0020.  Very different.

If you have a true 0001 - they are very fixable.

With a 0001, a mosfet (type of transistor) is failing on your main board.  Could be a few electrolytic caps too.

If you have good soldering skills you can fix this.  If you don't - then you will have to find someone who is capable

But come to think of it .... if your 360 is on for 2 minutes - then you probably don't have the 0001

thanks for reply ,  ya if no hdd goes straight  to 3 rrod 0001 sometimes it will just turn on for maybe 1 second then power down.     now with hdd we get 2 mins maybe then 3 rrod 0001.  this all started when i placed hdd in while xbox 360 on.

more info ifi put hdd in start the box then remove hdd anytime while box running goes straight to 3 rrod 0001

more info if i start box with hdd in then remove hdd it will go straight to 3 rrod 0001

just checked this today - the middle prong in the xbox power socket (on the xbox itself) is missing well it was running fine without that until i put hdd in. i tried using the 175 watt power plug to see what would happen so without the hdd in it powers on for 10 seconds then just dies with hdd in it has a red light on power plug so can not start at all. so does this mean i need a new socket for hdd on box?

May be the firmware might have been corrupted due to mod, try to flash and re-install the default firmware.

A firmware flash on the DVD drive has nothing to do with overheating, RROD, e74, etc.
