you can update the dash pretty far forward once you are running on custom.

Yeah - it can be worth it.  Get a large hard drive.

You should be able to go straight to the latest available. I would also consider increasing fan speeds, and removing the DVD drive to replace the GPU heatsink with a CPU heatsink. Otherwise it'll fry in no time.

Yeah I noticed it's running a little warm.  It snowed today so at least I can warm my hands up :D
