Isn't there some drives that work better with different media type ? I know the Samsung drives work great with dvd-r backs ups, but what about the Philips and Thomson ?

I did some serious testing on this last year but it coincided with my laptop dying so I've never got around to 'publishing' the full results but the one thing that was clear is that whatever the disc drive type (Samsung (F) and (B), Thomson, Philips, Hitachi) DVD-R is the only media type that works on them all.

I only use DVD-R media and you said those work best with all the drives. By the way would you know if the Samsung drive is the only drive that uses a rubber bands ? Isn't the Philips uses a little gears to open and close the tray ? I would think in the long run the non-rubber band drives that use gears instead of rubber bands would last longer.

All of them use 'rubber' drive belts although thinking about I've never checked the Hitachi's because they've not (yet) given me any trouble in that respect.

Would the Philips DVD drive last longer do you think than the Samsung in the long run ? Does rubber band in the Samsung going to eventually get dry and stretch out ? I guess this same question could be applied to the Philips DVD drive too I guess.

The Philips drive is the least compatible with media but does that really matter unless you live miles from anywhere and the nearest shop only stock CD-Rs?

I don't know of any official Xbox game that uses CD-R and I don't actually know what specific media type the Xbox does use.

By the way I have 1.6 Xbox soft modded with the splinter cell save mod. I was wondering can I replace the DVD drive with any other DVD drive from any other Xbox without any ill affects ?

Yes, Xbox DVD drives are entirely cross compatible.
