Stencils On Xbox Lid - Clear Coat?
« on: March 23, 2005, 01:14:00 AM »

I stenciled the Scary Guy and MetallicA logos on the top of an extra box I had... I also have a custom Ninja Star jewel coming, so this is going to be my Met-Box wink.gif

Question: How can I protect my stencils I sprayed on top with Plastics Spray Paint? Clear coat? I just painted a few stencils, I didn't paint the whole box...

None of the tuts on the mainpage really covered stencils...

yes, you're going to want to clear coat it... but make sure it's very light at first or else the stenciling will start to run. once the light coat is dried you can go over a few more times just to be sure you have it good and protected. <

What kind(s)/brand(s) of clear coat should I get?

Should I clear coat just the area of the stencil, or is it going to be obvious so I need to do the whole top?

EDIT: Ooops! Thanks The Fiend  wink.gif

yea, some people say go wid one brand or another, but with clear coat the brand is not much of an issue. but remember, spray in very thin coats or the clear coat will start going yellow.

Thanks guys, I just wasn't sure if there was a special clear coat for plastics, etc. I didn't know the same stuff that worked on wood would be ok...

Yea..... I wouldnt really reccomend you go with any type of polyurethane spray finish, or anything else thats made for wood. Those types of finishes are meant to be soaked in by the wood, so if you spray it on plastic its going to just sit there and start to gum up.

Just get a clear coat made for metal, plastic, etc.

Rustoleum makes some good clear coats both in gloss and matte finish. Painters Touch which is also made by Rustoleum makes some good clear coats.

Also duplicolor,etc.... <

Did a search, haven't found any other references to a MetallicA Xbox... I wonder if mine is the first?

All I am doing is a little stencil work, some clearcoat, and a custom jewel with Red LED's (not exactly a huge art undertaking), but hey, it looks cool so far biggrin.gif

I'll start a thread with pics when it is done so people can at least see it and make fun of my stenciling (it was hard!) and tell me "you should have used blue" lol  jester.gif <
