Please MAKE ANOTHER option ---

I own Two HDTV's - one 1080i Max and one 720 Max.

Or just: I own two HDTV's and can view 720P and 1080i without upscaling or downscaling.

A lot of us, like me, have more than one HDTV. One of mine is 1080i native, the other 720P native.

I've read a bit about all this... i got an Sony HDTV 1080i max

i know that 1080p is best but.... Which resolution is best between 1080i and 720p?

All 360 games are 720p... should i set my xbox resolution to 720p ou 1080i?

If i set it to 1080i, does the console switch it to 720p automatically?

I'm in the same boat as you my friend... I've got a projector with a VGA/Component input only

I'm planing on just waiting till the bulb dies next year sometime, by then they'll have the sweet 1080p LED based projectors out and hopefully the next gen format battle will be a bit more clear.

The real shaft is that you need DVI/HDMI with HDCP because of DRM tech

There is no "best" the "best resolution is what your display supports natively, MOST (not all) HDTVs are fixed pixels, so for instance if you have an LCD with a 1280x768 native resolution, even if you're feeding it 1080i it's still converting it to 720p before you see it, so you might as well just give it 720p and cut out the conversion step (which lowers quality and often adds lag as well as artifacts).

In general most people consider 720p superior to 1080i simply because it's progressive (less artifacting) and can run at a higher frame rate (which makes the picture much smoother).

The Xbox 360 ALSO has a scaler chip inside of it, so whatever you set in your dashboard is what you get for output NO MATTER WHAT THE GAME SUPPORTS. so if the game only supports 720p and you have it set to 1080i, it will rescale it to 1080i before outputting it.

Again your best off to set your output to whatever the NATIVE resolution of your display is. If you have a Sony TUBE TV then that's probably 1080i.

I believe 720p is better than 1080i, 1080i is using old technology like a CRT which goes the way of interlacing, were 720p is a progressive signal and draws the entire picture in one scan. In a way you could thing of 1080i as 720p being split up and sent in 2 scans instead of one. I use the 720p on my 61" Samsung and it looks great the 1080i looks good but the xbox just seems to look best at 720p IMO.

I got gyped on mine...it does max of 1080i but it doesn't do 720p. just 480p and 1080i. Last time I buy a HD set at wal-mart on clearence.

That could just be for xbox 360, alot of people have commented on xbox 360 scaling to 1080i being alittle off(possibly upconverted 540p).
Another thing why does it matter the technology is older, it still produces a picture of great quality, that has nothing to do with which image looks better.

Not many tv's do both 720p and 1080i

Heck Yeah!!

I own a 61" Toshiba DLP HDTV 1080i.

I use my dual SLI 7800's, x2 3800 pc on it through DVI Cable and man does it look sweet.

I also got my 360 hooked up to it too.

All's good so bring on the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray...

since i'm only 16, with no job.. i would love an hdtv... but can't afford one. I spent all my saved money on my 360, the wireless adapter, setting up a wireless home network for all my computers and games.

but i'd have to say that if i were to buy an hdtv, i'd wait until OLED came out... and the prices dropped

*sigh* 2 years ago before High Definition technology was popular we spend like 1500 dollars on 2 Toshiba Flat Screen Tv; one 32" and the other 27". So if we buy another tv, it'll be a bad deal since we got our tvs so early.

the battle between 1080i and 720p is up to preference... both resolutions look exelent.. I hear alot of people say 1080i is laggy in fast motion... I see none of this but I do see basic analog tv looking alot better then on a 720p unit... another argument is 60fps vs 30fps... movies are recorded at 25fps so 30fps is plenty enough to play something back smoothly... all I know is the 360 plays perfect in 1080i and 720p... now if your tv is 720p and you set your 360 to 1080i or a 1080i tv and set it to 720p it looks a bit off... that all depends on your tv too..

I have a 52" 1080i hitachi and I couldn't be more pleased with it... it was between the 1080i Hitachi and a DLP 720p Samsung... I couldnt beat the price of the Hitachi with its features...

I was curious about what res to run my Xbox 360 at when I got it. My TV supports both 720p and 1080i. Then I found this article that pretty much cleared it up for me.

720p = 720 lines of resolution every 1/60th of a second

1080i = 540 lines of resolution every 1/60th of a second

Which means that even if I have a game that plays at 60 frames a second.. I'll never see 60 frames a second in 1080i. 30 frames is all you'll ever get.

Why 1080i is a deceptively named format.
