Watching Videos On Xbox360

I don't have an xbox 360 but I'm asking for a friend who does.  I realise that the xbox won't play divx files, but can I convert divx to wmv and put them on a DVD for the xbox to play?

Or, is it possible to sync the xbox with my pc using windows media player and use that to put videos on the xbox?

What I'm asking is, is there anyway to get the xbox to play .wmv's without having windows media centre?  I have windows XP.
