svr always falls off when the next years version is coming close to launch. take the same test on 09 and check that very large player base. svr 07 was very activ untill 08. like any sports game i bet madden 08s player base just crashed being 09 came out today.

I find the fact that EA have multiplayer acheivements and yet dont support multiplayer beyond 12 mths very very annoying. Whoever said something about opening up games for silver gamers to play for free, I think was a great idea in theory, however I am not sure MS can justify server costs based on the used game market, which nets them  a big fat zero. Altho i think EA run differently on thier own servers or something, never lookad at ti too much.
Myself, I am a gold member, but I am tight, and as such plunder the used games at my gamestation regularly which you can pick up now for a fiver. However, whilst I know you cant expect much for that price, it is frustrating to find no one plays them online anymore.
Oh and someone mentions PDZ, picked up off ebay for £6 about 6 months ago and had great fun playing thru it, but wow, what a tough game on the higher difficulty. I do still plan to beat it on the top diifficulty someday, but I found the bots in there great fun, a simple thing like including bots means I can waste hours on it without worryin if anyones online, altho that said, it is still well supported online.

Are we sure it's not a feature of live that to cope with the huge numbers of online gamers across the world that Live is divided up into multiple servers in multiple geographical regions?

What I mean is; Were there really only X players worldwide on that day? Or were there only X players on that server in that region?

each location where live is available has its own server, but that connects to the other servers to allow you to play people all over the world

If MS are smart about this, they will allow all games to be played no matter what, but the server resources could be allocated dynamically between games.  There will always be a certain given amount of players, but it can shuffle the back-end software in and out of memory as needed to provide the correct amount of resources to the active games being played.  Hopefully game servers will never fully be closed down.

This is the downside to online console gaming. Unlike PC where there is a strong support by many players/servers after the game has lost popularity.
