i have a hitachi:
never had any problems at all till last night.  read 100% of all games, backups, and dvd's.  Now it only reads dvd's about 50% of the time and it does not read any original games or backups.  

i did the pot thing:
started at 5.5
moved it to 3.4
did not seem to help at all.  not even a little bit.

when i put in a disc, the laser just starts slaming towards the middle of the disc over and over and over again.  for about 30 seconds.  The motor spindle appears clean.

any suggestions on what i should try next (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

hopefully it does not involve buying a new laser (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I would not have tried the pot tweak first... as I consider it a last resort and it is hard to get back to factory and you run the risk of overdriving the laser and damaging it forcing a replacement.

I would but the laser back to the default values and try the following..

Rubberband fix... (google seach or search on here gives details)

And also check that the magnetic spindle that holds the disc down has not come unglued and sticks to the top of the drive case. (google search will also show pictures and give more details)

i did the rubber band fix:
my halo3 backup loads every time now which is better than before, but my halo3 original does not
and none of the rest of my games load (original or backup) except for this burger king game

DVD's still load fine

the magnetic spindle is fine.

if i remove the top casing part and load a disc, the laser just repeatedly tries to go to the center of the disc over and over again.

i wonder if that push button that is supposed to stop the dvd is malfuctioning?
