What Is Better?
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:14:00 PM »

Ok i got a 27" sony wega, non HD.  It has component inputs but is only 480i.
My question is this
what is better
hooking it with S-Video or components?

yep.

It basically goes like this:

DVI/HDMI>VGA>Component>Svideo>Composite>RF

you could make arguements about VGA vs Component, but Component is pretty much always better than s-video (unless what you're aiming for is blurrier video)

Technically component is better then s-video, and since you have component go with component cables.  But, the jump from s-video to component in picture quality is negligible; not nearly as great as composite to s-video.

YES exactly...

AFAIK S-Video is incapable of doing anything but 480i 4:3

while component can a wide variety of resolutions.

Though on a 4:3 SDTV the only difference between S-Video and Component would be a bit more color separation. Which, yeah, on a set like that would be negligible.

Yes, i was referring to his component 480i only TV, and my remarks pertain to a 480i image only.  Of course with HDTV's that is an entirely different situation.

You have to look at it like this,

In s-video all the colors and going though one wire, thus the colors merge and blend.
with a shielded component cable you dont have that problem, 3 different wires. One problem though, if you dont spend the money on a good component cable they are knowen for picking up radio and v Fi signals. Also, without the right fiber shielding, you and get loss of signal, and bleeding edges. The xbox 360 stock cables are ok, but if you buy are core system, and you have a 42+ inch tv MAKE SURE you get the cables from Monster. they will be like 20 bucks more.

Now you may ask who cares? alittle bleeding, alittle loss. say that when your sittin 10 feet infront of a 52inch. Dont cheep out, you buy it once, your done.
