Are Monster Cables Worth It?
« on: November 25, 2005, 07:33:00 AM »

On xbox 1, I got these $59.99 AV cables from Monster Cables. The picture didn't look any better and then I returned them the next day. I guess it depends on your setup.

i was wondering because with my setup i wan't to max out quality and especially sound becasue of the 5.1 for every game the 360 has. Right now i run the composite wires to a switch box and then from there they go to my projector. a nice 8 foot wide screen to play on is great but anyhow, will the monster composite cables lose any benefits once they reach the switch box?

That has seriously got to be the worst connection setup I have ever heard of. What kind of switch box are we talking about, one of those cheap plastic ones in the video game section?

there is "noticeable" improvements, but not worth to what they cost.

You won't notice the difference, trust me.  Especially with YOUR setup.  The only reason I bought monster cable for my 1.0 was so I could have the optical out.  And since the 360 came with it, there is no need to buy the monster cables.  The only way you will see a difference in quality is if you are running 20 foot generic brand cables and switch to Monster's insulated cables.  But with an 8 foot cable, you won't see anything.  The cables that come with it are fine... ESPECIALLY for the composite cables.

no it is not a cheap plastic one from the video game section, this switch is made for hdtv and only has component inputs.

You just said you are running composite to a switch box... so which is it? Component or composite?

And just because it's "made for HDTV's" doesn't mean it isn't cheap...

i'm using the component cables that came with the premium package sorry....

You asked about the composite monster cables. So you're using component cables now, but you want to know about the composite monster cables?

Wrap the conveyor belt in aluminum shielding, and a lot more filings get past the magnet undisturbed.  Wrap it with three layers and a decent gauge wire mesh, like Monster sells...

Don't forget the injected Nitrogen biggrin.gif , lol.

I don't know what kind of "high-end" systems you've seen, but it must have been an idiot who set it up because you can't really go too wrong with expensive unless it was put together horribly..  That's not to say you can't go right with cheap... but monster still makes fairly good quality cables.

The thing is, you have to have a REALLY good display to see any improvements just by switching to a certain brand or make of cable.  Hell, there was minimal difference in quality of picture switching from component to DVI on our 61" DLP.  Noticeable, but minimal.  Was it worth the extra 75 bucks to go to DVI? Yeah... I think so (if not for the quality, then for the peace of mind, lol).  But will it be worth it to you to spend an extra 50-70 to just switch to a "higher-end" version of what you already have? Probably not.  Unless, like already said, you're running 20+ ft of cable accross a room that may carry alot of interference straight from one device to the display, I don't see the need to spend more money.

yea dude, u need to change your set up. screw that. but as far as the monster cables are concerened in your set up it's like putting something nice in a shitty car. but since i have a totally sweet set up i'd get em. not cause it would help w/ image and audio quality but because since i have so many electronic components running through my entertainment system their is a lot of electrical radiation and the monster cables are highly shielded to prevent stray signals from intering the cable and fucking up your signal.

This is just my opinion which will probably make some people mad but whatever. I think Monster is the Bose of cables. The average person thinks Bose makes the best speakers because of their elaborate in store displays and great marketing but the truth is theres a lot of products out there that are better for less money. Its the same way with Monster. If you want to spend the money, yeah you'll be getting a good cable. I have a pretty high-end setup and have tried all different kinds of cabling. I really cant tell the difference between Monster and any other quality cable.  If youre talking about cheap, generic stuff from Walmart or Radio Shack then yeah, maybe youd notice. The cable options are a little more limited when it comes to consoles. If its really bugging you then buy the cable from a local store and return it if you dont see an improvement. Personally, I doubt you will.

well i have to say that monster cables are better.  i am getting the monster cable vga cables cuz i know they will be the best (and i'd rather pay 20$ more for quality that will last than something that will be cheaper but not as good, as 20 bucks over the 5 yrs of a console is not that much).  i do have a comperison to.  i was using my dads monster optical cable (from our nice setup downstair, but i needed to have the xbox in my room smile.gif ).  i bought a cheap 12$ optical cable online and i thought i'd put them side by side and see how the light looked.  the cheap cable was hazzed over, but the monster remianed crystal clear (with the white light).  Well i have not tested out the sound quality to see if i noticed a diffrence (and for the optical it would have to be a lot to justify the 60$ i would have to spend) i did notice that the monster cable's quality did rock.
Edit: My bad the optical cable would have only been like 20-30$ more,  maybe when i get some $$$  beerchug.gif

avsforum.com

anything under 6 feet won't make a difference... even the crapiest cables will match the image quality of high end ones...

with that said...

check out monoprice.com ... that's probably the lowest price you're going to find on "good" cables... best place for dvi cables...

and yes, monster is way marked up... $100 cables really worth $20... etc...  same sh*t with bose ... don't believe the marketing... and don't believe salespeople... (e.g. monster cables is best buy's biggest profit return...)

Did you put a flashlight to it or something?  The light that gets transmitted is red, not white.

And of course Best Buy is going to have expensive cables... that's what they're known for.  They'll keep their electronics at a decent price while they'll rape you with cables.  Stick to online retailers and ebay for that kind of stuff.
