I'm Looking For A Special Friend Near Orlando
« on: March 06, 2003, 01:57:00 PM »

Basically, I'm wondering if there anybody near Orlando that would be interested in helping a fellow Xbox fiend out.  I've got an X2L and a very shitty computer...(1+1=not a damn thing's gonna happen).  I've got a bad case of the blues.

I've basically got a 266 (sad, huh?) with a dial-up connection.  Hence, no place to hook up a USB or Ethernet cable.  Being that I just bought a house a new computer is out of the picture for now or anytime in the forseeable future.

Don't get me wrong, everything up to this point is working great considering my X2L is stock.  I just keep straining my ears to hear bells and whistles...none to be heard.  I'm just longing to feel BLUE and my WALLPAPER is lacking.  There would, of course, be some financial compensation. *evil grin*

You can get a USB card to put in your PC pretty cheep.  I'm guessing you don't have PCI slots... ISA may be a little harder to find but is out there.

EDIT: You can also get a nic for $10 or less.

Really?  I didn't know it would be that cheap.  Typically would it have to go where my modem card is or do ya think there could be another slot.  Yeah, I'm that dumb!!

p.s. My computer is a Gateway2000...if that actually means anything.

p.s.s I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have much trouble following the tuts if I could actually connect to my computer.  I was just in the hopes that someone lived within driving distance of me that I could humbly bribe to do the dirty work. *evil grin*

There should be different slots.  If you look at the back you should see several holes in the back of the case around where your modem is.  They should all be the same shape and typically in a line.  They may be open or covered with metal on the back side.  If they are covered with metal you can undo them with like 1 screw on the inside.  If you only have a modem you may have 3-4 more.  You may have a soundcard back there too.

If your want to connect to XBox get a ethernet card and a crossover cable.  Probably < $25 for both.  Your PC is old enough where you probably want to make sure you get an ISA card.  I don't think PCI was around in those days.

Yeah, it does have PCI slots.  I've added memory a few times.  And it is a Pentium although I can't remember if it's a II of III.  Duh!!!  I should know these things peoples.

I'll check on a new card tomorrow.  I already have the crossover cable.  Actually, I've got two extras...a 10' and a 25'.  I've got a 100' linking my Xbox to my roommates in another room.

Listen, if anybody wants one of these extra cables and are willing to walk me through this with a special-ed kind of assistance, I'll mail  you one of them.

Think about it.....
