It may be the codecs in concern are just too much for your poor X-Box to handle via MPlayer.

Hit the white button, and use the Play Using option to try the DVDPlayer.

Re-encode your files to a less processor intensive format.

As Scotty would say "She just don't have the power, captain" to play x264 mp4, mkv files.

... Something like that. Depends on the bitrate and what's happening in any given point of the video. I've watched quite a few x264 videos stored in the MKV container through XBMC with no issues, but that certainly doesn't mean all such files work.

In your case, you must re-encode.

Finally I'm not the only one having this problem.  I use the DVDPlayer and my videos "usually" play, but . . . I was wondering if anyone has ever reported an "optimal" encoding scheme for the XBOX . . . any hints, suggestions, smart a** remarks?

A quick shoutout to all those who are actively engaged in the coding of XBMC.  It's quite possibly the best open source programming project EVER!  After years of daily use, I'm still in love.  Wish I could say that about my woman.  LOL

I gather people have got native 720p to play using the Xvid codec, but I'm uncertain as to the bitrate used.

You also have to be careful with which audio codec you go with. Some of those eat a lot of horsepower as well.
