What media are you burning to?
Remember, unless you have a modded DVD-drive in your XBOX, you can't read CDR's in the stock drive.
Try burning it to a CDRW if you haven't already.

Maybe try a fresh install of the latest XMBC CVS.

Delete your XBMC folder.
Delete your XBMC saves using MSDash save manager.
Clear your cache drives.
Install the latest CVS. (01-02-2005 if you use the mainstream CVS releases)

This will eliminate the possibility of a software issue.

DO you have a DVD player that is capable of playing VCD or SVCD (I believe most models are) that you can test your burned copy in?
If not, maybe someone you know has a player you can test with?

Thanks for the suggestion. I did a complete reinstall and installed the latest CVS and it's working now. Comparing the latest CVS with the old one I was using it looks as if I was missing a few codecs. Well, thanks for the help.

I stream MP3s and SVCDs over SMB, and Webradio in the 1/2/05 build with zero problems.

Concurrent Version System, or a W.I.P, Work In Progress.

Old bugs are often fixed, but new may be in, and in some rare cases it wont even work.
