(XBMC) Skin Development / Thumbnail Resolutions
« on: August 07, 2007, 09:28:00 PM »
No there isn't.

The limit is in fact set by the user, and can be anything from 64x64 up to 512x512.  You set it via the <thumbsize> tag in advancedsettings.xml.  See the online manual for more.

The default is 192, so a 192x192 area of pixels.  Note that it doesn't have to be square - if you are using wide icons that are only 64 pixels high, then the equivalent size is 64x576.  This is the size they'll be cached at.

The interpretation of the number passed in to <thumbsize> is the square root of the maximal number of pixels to cache the image at.  Images are cached with aspect ratio intact.

You calibrate to cut a portion of the screen off.

You either haven't calibrated correctly (as you still see some of the bit that should be cut off) or you have the skin zoom set incorrectly.

What is appearing outside the calibration box is irrelevant - that's the point of calibration!

Jezz_X is extremely busy - he's in charge of PM3 and XBox-Classic and is the main coder on Mc360 and Vision, and helps out with virtually all other skins available.  Without him, we wouldn't have most of the skins we have now (and those in charge of other skins would confirm this!)

There's been 4 new dialogs added in the last week or so, which he has had a lot of input into, so obviously it's going to take a while before he has time to implement them in the skins other than PM3.

It takes hours to do a good implementation of a single new dialog, and he has 4 of them to work on, over 4 different skins.

Have a little patience - he's working on it.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Glad you all find the manual useful.

Please, please, please, please, please help keep it up to date - I have far less time nowadays than I used to, and would prefer to spend that time improving the engine than keeping the manual up to date!

Simple things like fixing it to the 2.1 format <control type="" id=""> etc. would be a great help.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Yes, jpeg's are fine.  Just don't make them too big.

If no path is present, it assumes they're in the media/ folder.

There's plenty more info about the multiimage control in the online manual.

Cheers,
Jonathan

No, textures.xpr is simply a packed format of textures for faster loading.  You don't need it at all - just the image files in the media folder will suffice.

There's stacks of info on skinning in the online manual - use it, and improve it!

(XBMC) Skin Development / XBMC Clearity Skin Beta
« on: January 31, 2007, 08:13:00 PM »
The bug is in XBMC, not in Clearity.  It's been fixed in SVN.

There is a workaround for Clearity, but I see little point in bothering with it - Clearity is still in development, and thus it should be expected to have issues here and there.

Cheers,
Jonathan

For those that have the greyed out, unable to select skin option:

Check you installed in correctly.  The layout should be:

CODE

XBMC/
  skin/
    Clearity/
      skin.xml
      PAL/
      NTSC/
      etc.

Take a screenshot of the same scene in both.

QUOTE

XBMC PC seems to render some things differently than the actual Xbox does, for some reason.

No it doesn't.  It's identical.  The only difference is the output pixel ratio, which you can adjust in XBMC_PC using the "Resize to Aspect Ratio" setting.

As for the stretched images:  Just watch the pixel aspect ratio of an NTSC TV (that you appear to be developing for).

To correct for this in XBMC_PC, click to set res to 4x3, then set to pixel size, then set to aspect ratio.  This will compress NTSC slightly horizontally, thus correcting some of the "stretched" nature of those images.

If you're using <aspectratio>keep</aspectratio> XBMC will do all this for you, assuming the image is the correct size to begin with (as viewed on a monitor with square pixels).

vmaxvboost:  A limitation of the weather.com API access agreement is that we only use 3 locations.

Try appending it to the URL in userdata/sources.xml (eg daap://192.168.1.1:<yourport>/)

XboxMediaCenter / Change Default Directory For Music Playlists?
« on: May 06, 2008, 09:59:00 PM »
The playlists path is a base path.

All playlists are stored off that path in subfolders.

Create a Music subdir in whatever your playlists path is.

You have to remove the:

<system>
  ... other stuff ...
  <playlistspath>whatever_is_here</playlistspath>
  ... other stuff ...
</system>

from guisettings.xml - that's where it's getting it's setting from.

Cheers,
Jonathan
