« on: May 12, 2004, 05:30:00 PM »

Xbox Case/Hardware modding / Hmmm, I Think I Found A New Mod, I Need
« on: March 23, 2004, 03:25:00 PM »
ok, first off, i must stress that i have a clear comp case, so room isnt to big of an issue for this mod, but lets get on with it

first, ill let you guess what im thinking by listing my supplies below

Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers
mp3 player
..................................anyone??

well ok, here it is

i want to take the speakers (including the sub woofer if its at all possible) and hook them up in my comp case, and then have my mp3 player hooked up internally (buy extend the usb port and controls so i can reach them) becuase i always take the speakers or mp3 with my xbox so i can listen to music in the background, so yes this mod does have a use

and as for power, id just split the power cord (its a regular wall outlet cord, 2 prong) and split the power with the 2 wires coming in from the psu power plug, so i got that covered

i figure the hardest part will be mounting (the 2 small speakers ill mount probably on top, and the sub will probably go on the side)
but the sub seems like itd be a bitch, as to i dont know how big it is, and i dont know what to do to port it and keep it (if its possible) from fucking up the xbox

but thats what your all for, suggestions and opinions  http://forums.xbox-scene.com/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='beerchug.gif' />

Personal Computer (PC, MAC, etc) General Talk / Ebay Help
« on: January 13, 2005, 04:04:00 PM »
well, are they 3 different items on three seperate auctions, or are they three of the same items on 3 different auctions?

if there three different items, email the guy and ask if he will reduce shipping charges upon your completion of the auction

ok, so ive had my custom pc for about 3 months now (asus k8v se, amd 64 3200, 1 gig crucial ram, 6800 gt, 2 raptor hdd's, etc) and its been working fine up till the last 2 weeks

i have everything overclocked (gt at 440 and 1.20 and cpu at 220mhz FSB)

and with those settings, i was on the threshold to system lock ups, but the machine ran fine, even for days straight

but lately every now and then the computer would freeze up, or id come back and itd be shut off (i have no virus')
so i underclocked everything (gt to 425 and 1.15, cpu to 210 FSB)

but after i ran 3dmark and aquamark, then did a defrag, the computer shut off on its own again, and now it wont turn back on

if i turn off the psu, then turn it on, everything will run for half a second, then die, but the LED on the asus mobo stays lit all the time

any theories??

something shorting out maybe?

ok, to start it off, heres my computer (official specs now)

Asus K8V SE Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3200
eVGA Geforce 6800 GT
(2) sticks of 512mb Crucial PC3200 DDR RAM (400mhz)
(2) WD Raptors (36 gig) in RAID 0 array
Creative Labs Audigy LS
DVD/CD-rom (16x and 40x)
DVD-RW+-/CD-RW burner (8x,4x,40x)
Windows XP Professional with SP1a
Zalman 7000 CU heatsink
Xoxide X-Dreamer II black case
Dell Trinitron 17" pure flat CRT monitor
Custom Paradigm front speakers (each front speaker has a tweeter, and two mid's) with a 12" JVC wall powered sub connected to a Yamaha Amp
Lots and Lots of Bawls scattered over everything

and for the software/OC specs

my processor is overclocked to a steady 2.2ghz by way of bumping the FSB to 220 (its the highest stable setting i can go)
The 6800 GT is at core freq of 440 mhz, and a memory freq of 1.2 ghz
my hdd's are running at a good steady 91mb/s (i have them on the slower via controller, which was my mistake)

thats about everything, so far ive been playing BF:1942 and have had no lag (on my old P4 1.8ghz i couldnt play most the pacific levels due to enormous lag)

ok, on to photoshop

basically, i dont plan on doing alot of complicated shit, but if i want to make a custom background of various individual pics, what would be the easiest way, and is there a good tut to follow?

also, when i make custom screensavers, it overides the automatic shutdown of the monitor (monitor should shut off after 1 hour, but with custom screensavers, it doesnt) is there any way around this? (im using the windows fun pack thing)???

thanks

ok, so i have a raid 0 array of sata hdd's on the via raid controller on an asus k8v se deluxe

the hard drives are (2) western digital raptors (36 gigs)

the highest score ive gotten when i benchmarked them was 87mb/s

but now all im getting out of the drives is 57mb/s when they should be averaging around 110 mb/s

and the seek and write times are 2x as slow (instead of 5m/s for seek and write, its around 10 or 11 m/s)

is there anyway or software that will optimize the performance or diagnose if theres a problem??

thanks

Ok, here it is

AMD Athlon 64 3200 (to my surprise, its a clawhammer core)
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
Nvidia Geforce 6800 128mb (ill be getting a GT very soon, money constrictions)
(2) Westerm Digital SATA Raptors (10,000 rpm) in a RAID 0 array, with Windows XP Professional
Creative Labs Audigy LS (i had it laying around so i figured id use it)
(2) sticks of PC3200 512mb DDR Elixor RAM (with copper heat spreaders)
Lite-on 16x DVD-ROM/ 40x CD-ROM
Lite-on 8x DVD-RW/+-/ 40x CD-RW drive
Zalman 7000 CU heatsink
PCtoys fan controller and lots of fans and lights
Xoxide X-Dreamer II case (with LCD temp monitor)
3.5" floppy drive (wooohooo, the most needed component)

Thats bout it, unless i have brain damage right now and forgot a component

Anyone have any software/overclocking/other utilities suggestions?
(im using firefox and reccomended virus software already (no, its not Norton Anti-Virus))

11
ok, so, lets say i dont plan on overclocking either of them, which one is better?

as the X800 has a core speed of 475mhz, and memory speed of 900mhz

where as the nvidia only has a core speed of 350 mhz, but a memory speed of 1,000 mhz.......

so, again, if i dont want to overclock either of them, and i just plug and play, which is better

(if it helps i have a Athlon 64 3200 and Asus K8V SE Deluxe, with 1 gig of dual memory (2 sticks of 512mb)

12
Ok, so upon building my system i realized the graphics card was broken (tried powering up, got no video) so i am going to order a new one, but i just got some extra money, so i have a whole new plan

i can either stay with the asus and AMD athlon xp 3200, and spend the extra money on an upgraded graphics card (whatever is better then a 9800 pro)

or i can stick with the 9800 pro and upgrade to a AMD 64 (between a 2800 and 3200) with matching asus

now, first off, whats the next best ati card after the 9800 series?

second, what would all around juice up the system, the better graphics card, or the 64 series AMD processor??

ok, now some other questions

1) if im using a cpu shim, how worried should i be that i might crack or break the cpu due to over tightening of the heatsink?
do you have any suggestions on how to prevent that?

2) if i upgrade my cooler on the video card, should i also be worried about overtighening and breaking that to?
if so, how can i tell when enough is enough?

thats about it for now, i just wanted to know about the video or cpu upgrade, as i was planning to slowly switch to a better graphics card and cpu, but since i have some more money now, i just wanted to know which to upgrade first, thanks

13
basically, i have found everything i need except some temperature monitoring software for my GPU

i have a ATI RADEON GIGABYTE 9800 pro (128mb) video card, and i am going to be overclocking it with ATITOOL, but i need some sort of software to monitor the GPU's temperature???

if it helps, ill be using an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo

thanks

Personal Computer (PC, MAC, etc) General Talk / Ati Vs. Nvidia
« on: July 13, 2004, 08:27:00 PM »
QUOTE (okandroid @ Jul 13 2004, 09:25 PM)
Alright to prepare for the release of Doom 3 I've decided to opt for a new video card. But the problem is ATI or Nvidia. Ive been looking at the Radeon 9800 Pro and the Geforce FX5900. I can't decide. I have no clue which is better, and most of all I have about 200 bucks to spend, maybe a little more. I want to be able to play doom 3/half life 2 and I have

AMD XP 2000+
512 MB DDR2700 RAM
Geforce 4ti4200 64mb.
ECS K7S5A Pro Motherboard.

id go with the ATI 9800 pro (128mb, 256 bit interface), as its what i got and its a very solid, very reliable card

go to www.dvdrhelp.com and get DVD Shrink 3.1, itll shrink any movie into an appropriate 4.35 gig video.ts file, which you can then burn onto a dvd
