as many have said before - 360 media setup is lame.  360 might have a chance of replacing my xbox once xbmc is running on it.  Until then it is the ugly step daughter that everyone ignores in my household.

MS is trying to create this allusion that the common user needs XP or vista.  THe average user needs a word processor, a pop3 frontend, and an internet browser and thats about it.  You certainly dont need MS for that.  The average user could save a 100 bucks or so by installing linux and linux is getting easier to install.

its just a matter of time for linux to become as easy to install as MS.

thanks for your reply

i did the rubber band fix:
my halo3 backup loads every time now which is better than before, but my halo3 original does not
and none of the rest of my games load (original or backup) except for this burger king game

DVD's still load fine

the magnetic spindle is fine.

if i remove the top casing part and load a disc, the laser just repeatedly tries to go to the center of the disc over and over again.

i wonder if that push button that is supposed to stop the dvd is malfuctioning?

any other ideas (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

i have a hitachi:
never had any problems at all till last night.  read 100% of all games, backups, and dvd's.  Now it only reads dvd's about 50% of the time and it does not read any original games or backups.

i did the pot thing:
started at 5.5
moved it to 3.4
did not seem to help at all.  not even a little bit.

when i put in a disc, the laser just starts slaming towards the middle of the disc over and over and over again.  for about 30 seconds.  The motor spindle appears clean.

any suggestions on what i should try next (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

hopefully it does not involve buying a new laser (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

ive been going back and checking my backups to see if i have any issues i should worry about.  I am using abgx360 to check and i have been using xbox backup creator 2.7 to create.  Every single one of my backups reports the exact same issue:

Testing BACKUP image file reports:
Video partition found
     Volume ID: "XGD2DVD_NTSC"
Volume space size: 2724 sectors (5578752 bytes)
     Volume creation date & time: 2006/03/06 21:09:07 (GMT-08:00)
Video padding contains bad data but won't be fixed because writing is disabled
     Video CRC = 91410773 (V0 = 81DF6964, V1 = E47F6A94)
Video partition matches known data (2nd wave)

Directly Testing Original disc reports:
Video partition found
     Volume ID: "XGD2DVD_NTSC"
Volume space size: 2724 sectors (5578752 bytes)
     Volume creation date & time: 2006/03/06 21:09:07 (GMT-08:00)
Video padding contains bad data but won't be fixed because writing is disabled
     Video CRC = 91410773 (V0 = 81DF6964, V1 = E47F6A94)
Video partition matches known data (2nd wave)

I have re-ripped from the original all of my games atleast 2 - 3 times now and checked them and i still get this same error every single time.  Video padding contains bad data. . .

Is this something i need to be worrying about, or is this normal?

thanks for your reply

i apologise if this has already been asked before.  i did some lookin and did not find any answers.

I popped a couple of backups in to check to see if they are properly stealthed, and they report that they are.  However, when i go to the crc popup and do a crc check of the "game data" it reports a bad rip.  I tried re-ripping from the original using XBCr with kreon many many many times and kept getting this message with every iso created.

do i need to worry about it?  if so, what am i doing wrong.

XDVDMulleter 9.2 used to check media stealth
XBCr 2.5 used to backup originals

out of curiosity  -  how have the made in india verbatims been working out for people?
Has there been a serious decline in the quality of verbatim DL's or has verbatim made them stick to the same level of quality as there singapore plant?

could this thing erase the flash of users using the spring update, but have not yet been on live.

these users may have been taged, but the console has not yet been able to contact MS to tell them it is out of compliance . . . ie can it keep a console from getting banned?

well this is not totals but' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='nofollow external'>hdgamedb tracks total sales at  As you can see from the graph on the linked page, with the exception of a couple blips, Blue ray is consistently out selling HD DVD in media as well.

I actually added a heat sync to mine a long while ago using an old PIII heat sync.  I cut it to size.  I have no idea if it actually does anything beneficial.  It might even be detrimental given the article above.  But i dont have any issues to date.  I also did the shroud mod as well. . .

Whatever reason? No, its the best reason - at least from microsoft's standpoint.
They have exactly what any producer would want - completely free third party support - by the millions.

Most programs these days have a windows varient - if not windows dependent. They have a foothold which will no easily be broken - that would require software companies to retrain staff, costing time and money with little to no revenue comming in. All of this to support a product which has a minority of the market share, quite literally a fraction of it. Its not going to happen any time soon.

and most users these days dont need any of that.  All they need is a solid OS, with a word processor, an internet browser, and an email client.  corporations have been fooled into thinking they need to buy these products from MS because there is nothing else out there or because of 3rd party support.  While I do agree with you that windoze has great 3rd party support, I disagree with you that the average user and small company will ever take advantage of that past the point where it makes sense to not go with linux or a mac.  This foothold is all in peoples heads.

the xbox 360 has had fantastic sales.  there is no doubt about it.  They continue to outsell sony by a fairly large margin.  So why should MS change, or try to fix anything?  We live in a market driven society, and they have a model that works well.  Early adopters of anything MS are bound to feel pain.  Its part of their MO, early adopters are the beta testers.  We have known this for years.  My guess is that MS will finally "fix" this issue, when it makes financial sense to move to 65nm simply by reducing heat output.  The funnly thing is that they could easily implement something as simple as RBJTechs shroud mod for nearly nothing (its just molded plastic) and eliminate a good number of these cases all together.  But why even do that until it hits them in their pocket book?

MS has built an entire empire based on mediocre products that for whatever reason people continue buy.    So why would they stop this winning formula now?

I am doubtful that they will do anything to fix this issue And really why should they? so long as we the consumer continue to reward them for shotty work buy buying consoles at rate that exceeds their competitor their is absolutely no reason for them to fix anything.

I remember the first time I saw an add implanted in a game, i thought it was only going to be a matter of years before I would be forced to watch mountain dew commercials between levels . . .

then it is very obvious that you got the 360 for the wrong reason.  to buy a next gen system so you can play last gen games and letting that be the defining factor of how happy you are with the system just seems assinine to me.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Yeah, I'd have to say, should have gone with an xbox if thats all you were wanting from it. No wonder you're unhappy you dropped 400 bucks for what would have been a 150 dollar gaming machine.

i won mine

i do have hopes for the future - but right now i am pretty disappointed.
