wouldn't the ps3 be technically superior to the xbox 2 since they have another year prob. to wait for cheaper prices on hardware to be able to make the ps3. like the xbox, it came out late but it was able to put higher spec hardware in the machine (but still wasnt able to capture the market b/c of the late launch)

Yes and no. What you are leaving out is that the developers for the Xbox 2 as will as MS will be creating more optimized libraies and coming up with tricks to get more out of the box during that year. So essentially the PS3 will be faster, but the box will be running its code more efficiantly. Espcially considering MS's push for focusing on software devolpment. Which one wins out, however, is a question we simply dont have the ability to answer currently.

word is they gave up on the cell cpu and they will both feature the same processor, however how many and what clocks is still questionable

Seems like they have put too much work into Cell to give up now. If they have given up, I'm sure they are still going foward with Cell technology, maybe in PS4(they'd have changed the name by now), and in televisions, and other electronics

compairing xbox sales to ps2 sales should show beyond a doubt that the raw power of a console has little to do with sales
what MS wants is to come out first (thats a big market share, the ones who want whatevers newest)
and to steal some of sonys exclusive development contracts (GTA was a big one)
