Just saw this on engadget and couldn't believe my eyes! An actual exception to the DMCA that benefits the people and not corporations!

Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.
Couldn't this be used as precedence and applied to technology other than cell phones? ie: jtagging your xbox 360 to run xell and legal linux, modchip on xbox 1 to run linux, etc. These have all been gray areas, but does this have a possibility to make it outright legal? Perhaps someone with legal insight can chime in here.

Interesting that it was illegal to begin with. My iPhone would be a useless piece of garbage without backgrounder, SBSettings, and custom ringtones

Never knew jailbreaking and rooting were illegal.
You can use other peoples paid for apps on a phone whether its been hacked or not. Don't see any reason why it should of been illegal in the first place.

Not quite true, apple only allows apps from the apple store, new winmo 7 will not allow side loading of apps and alot of new android phones do not allow sideloading of apps.

not sure about jtagging, but modchips have already been ruled in court to be primarily for facilitating piracy, so they are illegal based on that

But JTAG'ing (simply installing freeBOOT or XBR) your console doesn't allow you to play burned games or boot games from the hard drive without a disc.
