Title: Media Center Edition 2006 V.6 Released
Post by: Hades_666 on July 30, 2006, 11:15:00 PM
Media Center Edition 2006 v.6 (XBMC 2.0) has been released.

Thanks for your patience and to ALL that help.
A lot of work has been done to this skin. Palmtree got it going and i finished it, without his supurb graphics and assistance... this would have taken alot longer. This time we went for a TRUE® MCE look and feel. PLEASE, any suggestions to make it better, feel free to tell.

Anyways, enjoy and any issues you come across, give me a shout here in the forums.

Skin Resolutions:

16x9
4x3

I have tested both on my NEW 42' and it looks great.

There is still some little things to implement but time is to busy now... So it will be released with the next version when XBMC 2.0 is released. Any major issues, ill patch and update at xbox-skins...

Here are some screenies.

Sweet! Will try it immediatly.

[edit]
Looks very nice at first sight! But why didn't you include all the original sounds from MCE? License problems? Early version?

Keep up the good work!

[edit2]
The background seems to 'jump' each time a menu option is selected from the main menu. This happens in both 4:3 and 16:9, PAL and NTSC.

OK, instructions for adding the MCE navigation sound effects yourself. Note that you must own a copy of Windows Media Center Edition 2005.

1.
Download and install a  DLL resource extractor. The shareware version of Resource Tuner will do. You can uninstall Resource Tuner when you are done.

2.
Put the second CD of Windows MCE into a CD/DVD drive.

3.
Open the file MEDIACTR.CAB inside the [/b]CMPNENTS\MEDIACTR\I386[/b] directory using 7-Zip, Winzip, Winrar or Windows' built-in .CAB support.

4.
Extract the file called EHRES.DLL to a temporary directory on your harddisk.

5.
Open this file with Resource Tuner.

6.
Within Resource Tuner, open the folder called WAVE. You will see four ('the' four) sound effects from Media Center Edition here. You will only need FOCUS_A.WAV and SELECT_A.WAV (right mouse button on the file -> Save Resource As). The other files are not needed. INTRO_A.WAV is already included with the skin (it is the exact same file, bit for bit) and ERROR_A.WAV is not needed since it sounds so annoying and hasn't got anything to do with navigation.

7.
Note that the files by default get renamed to WAVE_FOCUS_A_WAV.wav and WAVE_SELECT_A_WAV.wav once you extract them. Copy these files to the Sounds-directory of the skin.

8.
Rename back.wav, click.wav and cursor.wav to something else.

9.
Rename WAVE_SELECT_A_WAV.wav to click.wav .
Make a copy of WAVE_FOCUS_A_WAV.wav. Rename the copy to back.wav .
Rename WAVE_FOCUS_A_WAV.wav to cursor.wav .

10.
Upload the skin to your Xbox.

This method is not too efficient (two copies of the same file), but it avoids editing the .XML file.

[edit]
I tested the skin for some time and I must say that it is very, VERY good. Hades, you have done a very fine job.

The 'nitpicks' I still have (nothing major):
-Not all sound effects are included (need help? PM me and we'll work something out (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) )
-The background which 'shifts' slightly when an option is selected from the main menu or when one returns to the main menu.
-(warning, VERY EXTREME nitpicking!): When XBMC starts, the 'Media Center' logo is shown, coming to the foreground. Once the logo has focused for half a second, it fades away. Can you add the effect that the logo gets even bigger just when it fades away, just like in the real Media Center? It gives a more 'depth' feeling in combination with the main menu.

Thanks for the Feedback ZepMan.

1. The background on the home screen, was fixed but i must have forgotten to fix it. All it was is a miss-sized tag. The height on the background should be 576 and not 480. All the backgrounds should be 576. However, good eye.

2. As for sounds, Have got them fully yet... I am still a bit reserved about using the logo in the top right which i will most likely change once i create a new one.  The same thing happened with BB.

3. The Logo on the Home screen. That is a can do... I take a look at it tonight...

This is what i was reading last night... Now i have seen many other open source projects you them as a template. But again, i really do not know.

"No logo, graphic, sound or image from any MS Web site may be copied or retransmitted unless expressly permitted by MS."

When it is changed to '576', the "scroll fader" for the main menu looks kinda weird. Like it doesn't fit right. huh.gif

I already wondered about the moment this issue would come up. The good point about your skin is that it looks & feels like the 'real' Windows Media Center Edition-interface. The bad point is that there are graphics and sound effects used which are copyrighted by Мicrosoft. I don't think Мicrosoft will sue you (because you do not gain any profit from it...), but I do think that a lot of people will see this as 'bad practice'. The people who will see this as copyright infringement are also the people who use software compiled with the leaked XDK, so they are not any less innocent.

My personal opinion is that you kickass by making Мicrosoft's great looking MCE-skin fully work with XBMC.

If you are doing this for a contest or upload it to a site, the skin should indeed be created without any copyrighted parts (if the policies say so). If you fear the darkness from Redmond, you should create a version without copyrighted parts. If some people in the community are starting to bitch against you ("Hey, you stole that!"), ignore them. It's better to steal and re-use something good than it is to create something crappy (think of Xbox Media Center, which (in compiled form) still uses code from Мicrosoft and which is the best application for the Xbox ever created). Мicrosoft has grown so big by using that tactic, so I wouldn't have any moral burden with that.

By the way, anyone who wants to write "Мicrosoft" and not "MS", copy the word from this post or from my signature.

If you designed this for ntsc (720x480), why do you set the BG images to PAL (720x576)?

By making the images 720x576 and not 720x480, one can later more easily convert the skin to PAL (don't need to resize all the textures from their original source) while it does nothing negative for NTSC-users.

Downloaded it, and it looks great (even set it as the current skin).  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

I love having the icons to choose from by the main items (like Shoutcast and Extentions for scripts)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

As far as suggestions, I think having the words "My Programs" to select from and then having an icon for My Programs is a little redundent. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) I would suggest having the Program Settings icon replace the Credits Icon under settings. Then under My Programs, since My Programs goes to Games by default, add icons for Emulators and Applications and keep the Extentions one under My Programs.

Then again, I guess that you could have made it redundent as a filler for something else that you intend to impliment later.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif)

Either way, can't wait to see what little things you intend to change with the new version after XBMC 2.0  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

Yep, the way the scroll fader works is not the best way to do it, but there really is no other way to do it with XBMC's skin engine.

Then I guess that there are two options:

1. Use a PNG-file with transparency instead of the background. [edit]: Nevermind. This seems 'practically' impossible to me and will probably not be of any use.

2. Create seperate versions for seperate resolutions.

The effect (when used with the right resolution) looks good enough for me. smile.gif

Once i increase the BG size to 576... I'll need to create a new Scroll fader too. So, when that is complete it will auto size correctly and not look out of place.

One little error is the positioning of the Kai link symbol on the 4th button instead of the 3rd (as seen in your image).

It appears that it was using the PMIII posx and posy settings so I've changed them to line up properly for you and also fixed the onup settings for buttons 1 and 4. Just copy and paste this into wordpad, save as MyPrograms.xml then replace the old one found in the Media Center 2006/NTSC folder.

The problem is that he is using overlay images to fade out the button scoller instead of using the inbuilt fade for it.   And when viewed in pal the screen res is 576 high instead of 480 like it in in NTSC so when everything gets scaled up to fit into pal the background images is getting stretched out to fit it but the location of the overlay images are staying pretty much the same so they no longer line up.

there is a better way and I did tell you  tongue.gif
but if you want to use your overlay images I bet if you made it the same size as the backround Image  with lots of transperancy around it then make it the same size as the background in the skins .xml file.   Then when XBMC is scaling the images it will scale both the same because it will have the same dimensions and sizes

but thats just my theory I havn't tried it

I guess that could work. Create an overlay of 720x576, make everything transparent, except for the place where the menu should fade away, and scale them both to the desired resolution. Doesn't this sacrifice a lot (double) the memory-usage? Since a second picture equal the size of the background must be loaded...

You guys are way to funny!!!!. That is what i'm doing now. I create the overlay to be the exacpt same demensions as the BG. So, in steps, i removed just hte middle piece where the buttonscroller is.

This was written before reading ZEPMAN's post. LMAO!!! Nice idea. smile.gif

As for the need for it. Edwin is correct. The built in buttonscroller fader does not give the same effect that we were going for. Hence, the reason the overaly was created. So what i did was make a png 720x576 which is completly transparent, then in the middle where the BS is... Added the top and bottom overaly faders.

So in theory this should work as XBMC will need to resize a 720x576 png instead of a 120x240~ one.
Hope it works.

BTW, i decided to host this skin skin on a separate site. Once, completed it will have everything required.

Every Xbox is the same. With a little magic from Enigmah Video Switcher, you'll have a PAL Xbox within a minute!*

Great skin and looks really great, but I'm having 1 problem but a serious one....

When I load the skin and exit out to the homepage, most of the titles and icons are missing.  I can just see the settings icon, and apps icons.

Everything else is gone.  I'm not too up on xbmc, but I'm not daft enough to miss the obvious fixes

My setup is:
ntsc xbox with component out to a hdtv
gui res is 720p
xbmc version is cvs 666 tvch

any help would be much appreciated, as i really like the look of this skin

tom

Awesome skin, been using it for a while now, and come up with a few suggestions for it

1, add Play DVD to the scroller menu above my programs like in the real Media centre.

2, option to disable RSS feed instead of just music

3, Presume the saves manger will be coming as it coded already

4, The short-cuts for my programs, could be used to goto emulators, applications, games

5, Lower the login information when right thumb is pressed, possible align it with the media centre logo (Mine shows logged in as Conners in the upper right and would look better in on line with the media centre text and logo)

6, system information details need to be moved up as the bottom text isnt on the screen

7, when in file manager, the objects counter is covered over if you use the default sources.xml

8, Possible to add the gap in the scroller menu like in real media center, so you know you`re returning to the top on the list again.

9, possible to add the volume bar from media centre (White bar with blue bar moving up it) instead of the current 1

10, when music is being played, have the counter in the lower right corner instead on lower left and use a similar display screen to the real media centre, with the big album art and track info below it.

11, right i`ll stop now lol

PS is there a guide on how to extract the sounds from windows media centre already installed on a pc, and not the discs? so i can add the real sounds to mine.

is it legal for those sounds to be included? seing as the start.wav from mce is already there.

well if you own media cemtre then it doesnt matter cause the sounds can be extracted and added to the skin, same as the sounds in the MC 360 skin, they can be added to that skin if you wanted to

Had a few more ideas about the skin, i really like this skin, and wanna try and keep coming up with stuff to make it look more orginal, anyway

11, change the first letter from Upper case to lower case, example my programs screen, where it says "Programs" would look better in"programs" and be further up into the top left

12, swap the case of My Programs in programs page so it reads MY PROGRAMS instead like the real media centre

13, restructure the main scroller menu to something like below

Play DVD

Online Gaming

My Programs

My Videos

My Pictures

My Music

Other Programs

Settings

**GAP**

**GAP**

14, Place my files, my weather, etc into the other programs screen instead of being on the main scroller

15, possbile to add recently viewed stuff to my pictures, recently listened to my music etc

16, add which tab is highlighted on the scroller on start-up

I wont carry on as i dont know if these can be added to the skin, and dont wanna seem like im adding more stuff to an already awesome skin

- Working things out with a new scroller.
- built new OSD images, just make them look better.
- Slowly working on true 16x9 and 4x3 NTSC support now that i got a new TV.

Implementing some of Conners suggestions.

As for that nothing major, why you got some bugs to report?

Sorry for the stupid question... For videos, music, etc... are there supposed to be icons at the right hand side of the screen (like the big radio from v5)? I get a few small icons for settings, a shoutcast icon for music, but no large pictures of the activity selected.

I also enabled the DVD button/KAI/Submenu, but these button's don't show. Using the lastest 09/12 XBMC, and deleted the xbmc savegame settings.

Am I missing something?

Also, sorry to bother you again about this hades, but any game plans on the bluetwo port? IMO this is still far and away the nicest overall skin available for xmbc (and the reason my other 2 xboxes are still using 1.1 builds!)

I didnt see this mentioned, but the Y button video mode switcher does not display what mode you are in.

Also there is some skin changes to XBMC builds 09-13-2006 and beyond, they say skin builders need to change stuff, dont know what.

I have run into a problem like that before but not with this skin. If I remember correctly, I think your folder structure for this skin is wrong. You probably have to many folders. This is what it should look like

/E/Apps/XBMC/skin/Media Center 2006 v.6/

inside of the Media Center 2006 v.6 folder should be the skin.xml file. Hopefully this has helped you.

reptilexcq2, if you have the media center extender software for the pc/xbox and tv-tuner card, then I honestly don't see why not.

occasionally, when i try to launch a game, the xbox just freezes. if i have music playing, then the music keeps playing, but all else freezes.

controlling kai does not seem to work. the arena label changes (for example, if i'm going from "xbox" to "first person shooter" in the arena tab, it is reflected on the label) but the info below it stays the same, so it looks like i'm still in the same lobby/area, i started out in. when i start the ui on my pc, the xbox does not seem to detect the loss of ui.

making bookmarks (for example, i made a bookmark in my music for playlists and shoutcast) will make a bookmark, but selecting the bookmark will not bring you to the labeled folder/action.

selecting a video to play freezes the xbox occasionally if music is playing.

that's all i've found for now. thanks for the skin =)
it's my favorite
