I have been having troubles with the HDD driver. When ever I try using it it says that I'm missing the DLL I was wondering if anyone had a solution with this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just did the tutorial and everything went well up to the point when i try to lock the hard drive.  I get a message that says "device not ready" i used hdlock.exe rather then unlockx.exe anyone have any ideas what the problem is and how i could fix it?

I have a problem when I put the dd=if() of=() I get 0+0 records in 0+0 records out I have my original xbox hd primary master and the temp hd primary slave and the temp hd linux reconigze it as hdb1 I guess it has nothing to do onlu that I have to put hdb1 on dd comand. I'm doing something wrong? can somone help me?

Hi I’m experiencing a vague problem. I installed (softmod uxe) a 200Gb Maxtor hard disk and got it to work but. The funny part is that it my xbox only sees 129GB or so. While I’m 100% sure that it is a 200GB hard disk. I already placed this hard disk in my TSOP xbox and that one recognizes my 200GB hard disk just fine. So my question if there is a maximum capacity for a softmodded xbox? And if so is there a work around for this problem. Please excuse my bad English its not my native language.  unsure.gif

This is basically a modified version of what heathkit did (thanks a million for the xlinux dd thing, that was my only problem to solve in my quest)..

BUT I didn't want to use a SAMBA share or bother installing config magic.  

Needed:
1.0 Xbox (or so mine was)
New HDD *lockable*
TEMP HDD (FAT32, can be a couple gigs)
evox installed and working
HDD driver
hdprepar (yes, that's the spelling)
liveinfo
dos boot disk with unlockx
xlinux boot CD
some basic knowledge....


READ THIS OVER FULLY BEFORE YOU START (twice even!), you may be able to merge some steps together if your more comfortable than the level I wrote this for.

Assuming you already have Bert N Ernie or something loaded... *see other guides*

1. Run the Backup option in the evox menu of your xbox

2. FTP in and download the c:backup folder somewhere safe

3. Boot DOS floppy

4. Use unlockx to unlock your HDD with the key from the "backup" information from evox. (unlock it twice in a row)

5. Reboot in windows and run HDD Driver (even if it fails, just use the utility to backup your HDD, just in case!)

6. Reboot in windows with the new xbox HDD drive you want to use connected

7. Run hdprepar and DO your NEW drive (just zero first 4096)

8. Run liveinfo and use your .bin from the evox backup and select the NEW HDD and get the _new_ hard drive key... write it down/print it, you'll need it

9. Reboot off xlinux CD-ROM with original xbox as Primary Master or CS is fine (so i'll assume its hda) and your TEMPHDD as Secondary Master (so i'll assume it's hdc) and make the CD-ROM Secondary Slave.

10. Once in xlinux, if you go to /dev you should see hda50 hda51 hda52... and hdc# say hdc1
     
11.  now in console type
        mkdir /mnt/temp
        mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/temp
        dd if=/dev/hda51 of=/mnt/temp/xboxc.img  (makes image file on temp HDD)
this should give you a message about blocks in and out (complete)
       
11a. Now Reboot with the NEW Xbox HDD as CS (should become primary master).  again in console type
        mkdir /mnt/temp
        mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/temp
        dd if=/mnt/temp/xboxc.img of=/dev/hda51  (writes image to new HDD xbox's C)
this should give you a message about blocks in and out (complete)
now we can check it out!
        mkdir /mnt/newxboxc
        mount -t fatx /dev/hda51 /mnt/newxboxc   (now you can ls it and see if it's okay)
lets copy that xboxc image FILE to our new xboxc, for FTP later as backup.
        cp /mnt/temp/xboxc.img /mnt/newxboxc/
should be all done now

12. Reboot with DOS floppy and NEW HDD connected (only) and have jumpered as the same as it was on the original xbox HDD (mine was cable select), make sure it's on the PRIMARY CHANNEL.

13. Run unlockx and select the new HDD and lock it with the NEW HDD KEY you got from liveinfo.

14. Reboot and check that it's locked in unlockx

15. Install into xbox and boot it up! (should work like old drive)

16. FTP in and download xboxc.img to your computer

17. configure evox to format your F, X, Y and Z drives (NOT C or likely E) *see other guides*

18. Reboot computer with original xbox HDD and run unlockx and enter the ORIGINAL HDD key to lock it

19. Reboot and check that locking went ok

20. Put original xbox HDD in static bag and enjoy the larger one you just installed


I know you can eliminate some reboots and whatnot by having more drives connceted, but I just left it as is (little less likely to mess your drives up by say hdprepar'ing the wrong drive).

BTW, I am at working typing this... I did the swap late last night so I am going by a fading memory :).  I'll edit this post as I can since I know it's not written very professionally at all.

I don't think this command would work.  I originally wanted to do something like this, because then you could bypass making the image altogether and do

dd if=/dev/hda51 of=/dev/hdc51

However, I couldn't get xlinux to see the xfat partitions on anything other than the hda (primary master) drive.  I could be wrong, but I think you still need some manner of secondary storage.  This could be a samba share, a fat partition, or any linux partition.

Ah, thanks for answering that question..  

I had a FAT32 temp drive and went to that first.. I'll update the guide now for that.  I was assuming it could load fatx off any channel, but I guess not.

no ... the evoxnewhd disk will not boot with a empty HD and original bios.

I just got the Free-X exploit up and running last night.

I don't think 8-10GB is enough space for me.. heh..

I may try this later today with my spare 30GB drive, sounds somewhat simple enough.

HDD driver only works with xbox hard drives, how did you get it to work with anything else? Sorry but this just sounds too easy.

can someone give me specific intructions on what to do?

Once in xlinux, if you go to /dev you should see hda50 hda51 hda52... and hdc# say hdc1

what in the world does that means.. the guy didn't even give an exact command line... I'm not good with linux.. but I need to know.. how do I look into... 'dev to see those devices... please..

shinobi006... ya it has been a while since I used HDD Driver and I missed out a step.

The HDD Driver can restore a backup image also but...

What you need to do is hex-edit the new HDD so it looks like an Xbox drive which enables the HDD Driver to recognize it.

Here is some relevant info from the rtf that comes with HDD Driver.

If I remember correctly, you do not need to prep the new/old drive with zeros with hdprep, but just hex-edit those bytes with winhex at 0x600 and then HDD Driver will recognize and re-image the entire drive from a backup (ie. it would overwrite the zeros anyways). I think hdprep hex-edits the 0x600 automatically but I am not sure. I would just de-select zeroing and see what it does. I will try later and let you know.

As I said above to use ConfigMagic to unlock the original Xbox HDD... you can also, like mentioned before, use UnlockX and the password from the evox backup. This is probably less scary but more typing.

I tried an old 30 gig drive. I hex-edited at 0x600 the BRFR and HDD Driver still did not recognize it. I am using a different computer and had to scrounge google for the dll's so maybe the versions are not compatible. I may have saved my old configuration before at home so I will try again. Strange because that is what I used before but it was with a new HDD so maybe having it all 00'd is required for HDD Driver.

I did notice that hdprep did not put the BRFR in at 0x600.

I guess I will try the linux thing now hehe... thought it was possible to use HDD Driver.

Sorry if i missed this but does this allow all the extra space of a larger hdd or does it just allow a modified drive to be used(but with only the stock standard 8 gigs that the original bios uses)?
Great news if the former is true,virtually eliminates any use of a modchip or tsop mod..

Using the method from the first post, you do indeed get access to a 120G hard drive.

I immediately turned around and flashed that machine's TSOP.  Unless you really want to play on live for some reason, I have to recommend just connecting those two jumpers and flashing your TSOP.  Actually booting a modified kernel is worlds better than using this exploit.

Seriously, being able to boot off cd-rw is fantastic.  You don't even have to solder.  Go to Autozone, buy a $10 rear window defogger repair kit, mask off your motherboard with tape, and paint the two jumpers with the conductive paint from the kit.  Boot evox, flash with xecuter 4977 and you're done.

looking through archived news, complex says hdprepar copying the C and E drive, and then locking it with the correct code would work..............
I'm thinking you have to zero the entire drive, and then just copy C and E over. This would be alot easier for people who don't want to use linux or just don't know how. I'd try it, but the computer I'm at would freeze any drive i put in. I can't try this until i get my computer fixed whic would be around next week. someone should give this a try..............

so sorry... just was suggesting a different way which I used before.

I cloned a drive the way I explained a year or so, maybe longer, and it worked. For some reason it is not working now in my tests. It could be because my PC is newer, or it could be that the test drive I was using was not new and had junk on it which made HDD Driver not recognize it. Too bad the author who wrote HDD Driver did not release newer versions to make more compatible and allow any drive to be imaged.

ok.. first... get the atapwd, hdlock, hdunlock, hddisabl...utilities.... put in a blank floppy

second... get the gamesave exploit of evox and use the utilities of evox to backup your xbox's info... ftp into your xbox and copy and paste your backup folder that was created by evox... now.. look at the text file.. that contains your xbox's OEM HDD key... save it... write this down...

The Replacement Drive must be one that is Lockable...
third.. download liveinfo... click load eeprom and select the location of the backup folder created by evox.. and pick eeprom... ok... now there are two sections to this program.. look ignore the top... go to the bottom and search for the replacement drive you want to install.... (it should already have been on and setup on the computer since bootup.. or if you have winxp or 2000 you can go to device manager and keep refreshing them... until you see the replacement drive...) when you click on your replacement drive.. it will generate a key for that drive.. this key will fool your xbox into thinking it's the original.. so save this key also... write it down...

fourth... download hdprepar... the program that partitions the replacement drive with xbox characteristics.... well just zero the first 4096 sectors.... hey be careful... I have a Maxtor 80GB HDD that stores my OS and the one I have in my xbox now WD80GB... so using this program.. it's tricky cause two 80GB HDD?.. which one do you choose?... I took some time figuring this out.. I noticed that the WD80GB displays a lesser amount of space than the Maxtor 80GB... so you see... be careful............. once this is done...

fith....get the HDD_Drivers... by T00G... u know what I'm talking about.. the annoying program that is almost impossible to really detect your xbox's drive after the hot swap method.... By the way you do not need to do the hot swap method as you will soon see... ok.. remember the floppy of the hdd utilities I asked you to create?.. well here we go.. time to use them...

Alright shutdown pc... take your xbox OEM HDD out and place it on the Primary IDE cable.. no other devices should be using this cable... oh be sure to set the XBOX HDD's Jumper settings to Master... ok.. u know your HDD with the OS?... place that one on the Secondary IDE cable... mines was set as master for this cable....

now.. turn on your pc... u can skip the detection of the discs... I just want you to be able to boot a bootable disc.. I used my old M$ 98 startup disk... to get me to the command prompt... once there... put the hdd utilities floppy in.. and type atapwd... this will take you to a screen.. we just want to make sure we can see our devices... if you don't see it.. u most likely need to refresh the screen.. there's a key there.. read the bottom panel for specific intructions on that... ok.. look for your xbox OEM HDD.. you'll see it... now... press Esc... and we're back in the command prompt... do the following:
A:/hdunlock.exe
in there another little GUI pops out.. press the # that corresponds to your xbox's OEM HDD..... it will then ask for the password... type in the password you got from evox hddinfo.txt... e.g. f39ead..... (ignore the ':' and don't bother putting the zeros after u come across :00: everything at that point and after.. ignore zeros...).. ok... after this.. press enter.. it should say done...
now check atapwd again.. look at your xbox OEM HDD.. and SELFXV.....under L it should now say '-' sign.. .meaning you unlocked it... press Esc again...

now u need to use hddisabl.exe... do the same as above it will ask for the password again... moments later... Done... use atapwd again.. and now the E has a '-' sign under it also... we want this to happen 'cause when you reboot your PC... we don't want the HDD to be locked again.. that's why you disable it from locking...

ok.. reboot your pc again.. log onto windows xp or 2000 again... hey I don't know about win2000 users but if you're on an xp computer.. it's gonna take a while loading the settings.. you'll see what i mean.. don't worry you'll be able to go on windows.. soon...give it time... once in windows... run HDD_Driver... it might say an Invalid File Size.. error.. lol... good news for you.... it's reading the xbox OEM HDD.... but anyways.. don't click on that error.. just go to the top and click backup the hdd... u need about 8-12 gb of freespace on your OS HDD... 8 gigs max.. if your xbox.. only has the dashboard... and like no saved games... if you know what I mean... ok... so... let it make the backup.. should go really fast.. like 30 mins at the most.. hey guys... uhmn.. careful... HDD-Driver.. one time was actually trying to backup my OS HDD... I knew this 'cause I was taking extremely long.. and I was looking at the backup file... where I saved it... and it had passed the 30 gb range.. so.. surely something wrong... (don't backup anything unless you see the invalid size error... ) if you don't get this error.. then don't back it up unless you see the the partitions.. and information.. like the files in the xbox.. on the left panel...

ok... it finished backing up?... good.. put in the replacement drive.. remember we used hddprepar?.. lol.. this is gonna fool HDD_Driver into thinking it's the xbox HDD again... well replace the xbox OEM HDD with this one.. with the same jumper settings...set it on master... go to device manager and refresh the devices... until you see the new drive... if you don't you might need to reboot... it should then work...

Back in windows.. or already in windows...ok... now.. run HDD-Driver... it's gonna say that invalid size error.. I am almost definetly sure about this one... ok.. now... don't click ok to the error.. just go to restore.. and select the backup file of the original xbox... and then you will have some options.. to restore the whole hdd or other sections of the drive... u will see what I mean... if you didn't have any saved games before... just click on system restore part... other wise click whole.. the system restore.. goes so fast...lol.. like 5 mins... and you're done... ok.. hey.. guess what you got and exact replica of your xbox OEM HDD except.. u need to lock it now...

reboot with a bootable floppy.. for me.. it was M$98 startup disk.. used command prompt.. and slide the hdd utilities into the drive and type atapwd.. u'll now see the new HDD.. if you don't just... refresh the screen again... ok... press Esc.. then run hdlock.exe

ok select the # that corresponds to your new drive and then... enter the password.. u got from live info... u have two different keys on you by now... u have the xbox OEM HDD key and the replacement HDD key that was generated by liveinfo... ok.. do as above.. lock your drive.. before you press enter make sure it matches exactly what liveinfo gave to you... and.. it's gonna create a text file in the floppy containing these utilities.. save it... on another computer or something...hey.. u did it .. your replacement drive is locked... verify with atapwd to make sure...

take the replacement drive and slide into xbox... don't forget to put as cable select.. and turn the xbox on.. without a game and it should... load the M$ dashboard...

that's it... it worked for me.. it took me two days to get this... it was all HDD_Driver's fault... it wasn't actually reading my xbx OEM HDD... but now that I see it.. it shouldn't take more than 1 hr of your time if you know exactly what you doing... hey my xbox.. I never put a modchip on it.. I never soldered anything.. that thing ...the only thing I touched was the HDD... now.. it has my WD80 gb HDD no modchip.. just playing around with complex loader... peace out..

after reading these tutorials for installing a bigger HD with the xploits gokussj007's seems the most straight forward and easiest. However, I do have a few questions about it or anyone whose used his methods.

I currently have the complex loaded 1.10 installed with evox running and working fine up until yesterday when I forgot to leave the powerbar on and now have the now so common clock problem and endless loop of restarting. I am wondering if (I after hours of it looping) eventaully get back in and replace my files with the bert and ernie reloaded ones will this end the loop? Or how do I go about doing so? Will using this method for installing a new HD solve the problem or will I still have the loops even with my new Maxtor 80GB installed?

Also, I am running windows98, is it possible to do this without upgrading seeing how I believe liveinfo requires Win2000?

Firstly, I would like to complement GokuSSJ007 for such a wonderfully simple walkthrough of installing the new HD. However, Phlome: If you managed to leave the IGR setting on in Evox, for some reason implementing it (usually pressing L+R+Start+Back) seems to get me out of the clock loop. It's at least worth a try. I have an original XBoX, so Kernel 3944.

If I understand how the Xlinux cd is mounting the fatx devices, hda51 is a "special" device not usually accessed by linux.

So dd if=/dev/hda51 of=/dev/hdc51 will not work to copy the C partition.

BUT.....

DD doesn't care about the format of the disk, it just copies sectors. So if you access the disk through the normally availible device you should be able to do a direct copy.

WARNING!!! I haven't tried this yet, but will get a chance in the next couple of days, but I think this will work:

Assuming that the original Xbox HDD is Primary Master and the replacement drive as Secondary Master:

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc bs=512k

This may take a while, but it should copy the entire disk to the new one as is. Then you should just have to format your F partition.

I have my WD 30gb on Primary channel set as master. I deleted the NTFS partition using fdisk. Ran hdprepar then HDD_Driver, still couldnt find the hd. I rebooted and same thing. I'm not sure what/if I am doing wrong.

I just restored a backup with HDD_Driver even tho it never detected the replacement HD. Rebooted with win98 bootup floppy. Locked the replacement HD. Tried in the xbox but got the error screen. Then I put it back in my pc and unlocked it. Booted to windows. HDD_Driver know reckognized it as a Xbox HD and I restored my backup again. Locked the HD. Installed back into Xbox. And viola! it worked!

*note: aka brandonop who I met at #ms-legal and pointed me in the right direction.

Ok I figured out why HDD Driver did not work for me.

I presumed that WinHex offsets were hex on the left side of window, but turns out they are decimal hehe. So the offset of 0x600 is really 1536. I put the BRFR there and HDD Driver found it!

I cannot get hdprep to prep a drive that HDD Driver recognizes. Maybe some systems it does not work on!?!

Right now I am having problems with the F: drive on my replacement HD. I had hex edit a backup of my OEM xbox hd as a workaround using the tutorial here. And I think I might have screwed over the F: some how by doing this. It sux my orignal backup is gone so I will never have a factory HD again.

Is there a way to hex edit my F: drive back in? I think I just have to add a FATX somewhere in there to get it reckognized.

I just hotswapped my XBoX HD to make a backup copy with HDD_Driver, but now I can't seem to get my new HD to be detected by HDD_Driver. I took a look at the Drive, and it appears that xhdprepa is not writing the BRFR in the appropriate slot. Does anyone know if simply writing it in manually with WinHex will work, or if I have to do something else?

Any help would be very much appreciated,

If you are having problems with f: drive... please state your config.  ie bios/kernel, evox ver, fonts, hdd...

gazbro......I've unlock my X box harddrive this week using unlockx......If you made the backup folder when you have install the Complete_Signed_PhoenixBiosLoaderV1.0....You will not be able to unlock the harddrive....The password provided is incorrect....Lucky I've made a backup of the backup folder when I install the 007 exploit...The password there is the correct one.....I don't know why the Complete_Signed_PhoenixBiosLoaderV1.0 exploit will make evox create the wrong password....I think this will help you....

I've got a 120GB drive locked in the xbox, and it is booting Evox via bert:reloaded and Phoenix bios loader.  I used a method similar to the method goku described -- I did a hotswap in some places where he did not, but basically I first used HDPrepar and then I used HDD-Driver by Toggg to restore the xbox backup onto the new hdd.  Then I locked the drive with the new key generated by liveinfo.  The xbox will boot ok, run phoenix, and launch evox.  The first time I did the restore, it did not load the games and applications on my e: drive.  I used evox to format my F: drive, and since I accidentally reformatted c: as well I restored the HDDDriver backup again.  This time it loaded all the information on to my e: drive (games, apps, emu, etc.).

When I try to launch anything, however, Evox just returns to the menu.  It's like the XBE aren't signed or the BIOS isn't being patched/replaced properly.  But the system boots ok, and the same files on the original HDD work to run unsigned XBE.  Any suggestions please?

Xbox v1.0, kernel 3944, Latest XboxLive dash (4977 iirc)

wink.gif  and i know that there is a lot of people out there trying to get there HDD recognized as a X-Box disk with xhdprepa i decided to try it with a couple of different HDDs and on two different OS Win-XP and Win2k.

As test HDDs i used:

Maxtor 120Gb ATA133 8mb cache

IBM 60GB 7200RPM ATA100 120GXP

and an old unlockable Samsung SV0432A 4.3Gb

Ok, and how did the test turnout, well i couldnt get any off these disks recognized in HDD Driver as a X-box Disk after that they had been prepared by xhdprepa, not on the XP PC or on the Win2k PC.

I tried to zeroing first 4096 and when that didnt make it i tried to Zero the  Entire drives but HDD Driver would still not recognize the disks.

Ok, time to try WinHex and edit the disks at offsett 0x600 with BRFR, and what do you know HDD Driver recognizes all three Disks after i have edited them in WinHex
even the old unlockable Samsung SV0432A 4.3Gb that i just throwed in for fun.

So my conclusion and this is only based on my own experiences, is that you must use xhdprepa and after you have used xhdprepa you must use WinHex and edit the disk at offset 0x600 and add BRFR.

This is the only way i have been able to get it to work.

I did the thigs goku said and when i try to generate a key for my HDD it's generates the same key for every drive.I got every thing down but that key is what i need to get new HDD running.Is it common for liveInfo to generate the same key????

Ive followed the instructions by grokuss in this post, which I screwed up and killed the 120 I was trying to use.

I'm now trying to put my original hd back in my box. I've write enabled, and locked it. Verified with atapwd and set to cable select.

All's I get is error 6.

It was hacked using the original reloaded fonts, then phoenix loader 1.0 with the X2 bios from "the usual sources".

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a problem with error 6..I got so many keys and they all didn't

work for me.Hdd driver didn't  work when i  zero with HDDPreparer..So i

use Norton Ghost 2003 boot disk.I put the original in the first IDE

channel and the NEw HDD in the second IDE channel.In ghost YOU HAVE TO

QUIT..this will bring you to the dos prompt.TYPE "ghost /ir" this will

enable ghost to read in raw mode.Now go (to Local> To disk>Disk) make

sure ur original is the source and the destitaion is the newHDD.Make

the copy....wait about 10 min.

the old key was.....This will generate new calculated password.<write

Add original HDD to xbox and load up Config Magic.Once you see ur HDD

Load Xbox EEPROM> wait about 10 sec and if you did it right u will see

ur HDD model # and Serial # change to the HDD you have.<very important

Password...Copy/print it...NOw just unlock newHDD and lock it with

Can someone explain writing BRFR to offset 0x600 with WinHex?  I must be missing something.  How do you type BRFR in that location.  Hex only goes from 0 to F.  I can write B & F, but not R.  What am I doing wrong?

i'm having so much trouble with this! i'm not sure if it just my drive or what buy in liveinfo i'm not able to get the calculated password. i'm using Win2000 and in device manager it sees my 80 gig Seagate Barricuda drive (st380011a) but with liveinfo i don't know how to select the drive.  i loaded my xbox's eeprom and it gives my the password for it, but how do i find the password for my seagate hard drive? is my hard drive even lockable? i've put mandrake linux on the drive so should i fdisk the drive or something to clear it?

I had the same problem.  I got around it by configuring the new hd (the one I want to generate a password for) as Master on the Primary cable.  I configured my Win2k disk as a Primary on the Secondary cable.  In the computer BIOS, I set the computer to boot from IDE1 which is the drive sitting on the Secondary cable set as master.

i tried putting the 80 gig as the primary master and win2000 as primary slave, but i liveinfo i still don't know how to select the drive. should it be Physical Drive 1,2, or 3? i have some screenshots if that would help clarify the problem. and in hdprepar when i try to zero the drive it says error writing disk at sector 0. should i use a hex editor or something to change the offsets or whatever?

Since I got the key from Config Magic and I made backups of C and E with ftp, I don't really see why I should still connect the original drive to my PC. Or is a simple copy of C and E not enough (ie must use dd or HDD-driver)?

When I changed to a bigger hd, I also thought of that.  The only problem would be how can you format your new hd in fatx.  Also, how large would you make the partitions for the C, E, X, Y, Z drives?

I had no answer to those questions, so that is why I stuck with hdd driver.

I have been trying everything to get this new hard drive in! is their some limitations for win2000 or something with liveinfo? is their any other way to get the hard drive key for my new drive? i heard somewhere that with certain motherboards liveinfo cannot detect a new hard drive. win2000 sees it in device manager but liveinfo just can never see it! can someone please help me?! i'm leaving soon and i'd like to be able to put this in cuz i'm not going to be able to use a comp. for awhile. thanks to anyone!

Almost! i really thought i had it! i tried exactly what deadly said; i used configmagic to get the password for my new hdd, and i got the password for the xbox drive and unlocked both using unlockx and used ghost and waited for 10 minutes until it said that everything from the xbox hard drive had been copied to my new drive.  so then i relocked both drives using their respective keys, and first tried putting the xbox hard drive back in the xbox and it worked, no problems there, then i tried rebooting the xbox with my new hdd and it gave me an error 6! then i figured that maybe it had just copied funny, so i tried unlocking both drives to do it again, but now my xbox hard drive can unlock but the new hdd won't unlock! i can't figure it out! thanks for any help

lock it with atapwd? in there t has '+' under S,E,L and '-' under F,X, and m under V. so that means it is locked with a user password but not frozen, right? and if i try to do 'unlock with master password' or 'unlock with user password' in the SECURITY COMMANDS, there are not enough spaces for the unlock key. are there other settings i can mess with?

yeah i feel pretty dumb about the whole 32 characters thing. the password i should have used was 32 characters, the unique xbox hdd key or whaterver. but i was dumb and used the wrong password (40 characters).  nope, don't have msn messenger or aim but i'll check the floppy

Use ftp commands to format the "F" drive...Some people that don't know that much format their hole HDD instead of the partition they wanted too.


 Just skip down to "Formatpath DeviceHarddisk0Partition6" and it should work...ftp raw

Success!

Followed the first posts instructions mofiying a few steps to make it simpler.

Instead of unlocking the drive first I simply hot swapped it in Xlinux.  This was somple at the xlinux boot screen hit pause, boot up your xbox, and unattach the ide cable then attach the one for your pc.  Resume your pc and if you get no errors during xlinux boot all is OK
Using this method you can skip steps #3 #4 and #5.

For step 11 I used the original drive(hot swapped) and the new drive.  Original was primary master new one was secondary master.  I issued the command dd if=/dev/hda51 of=/dev/hdc51 . This works.  If you need to copy your existing e: as well do dd if=/dev/hda50 of=/dev/hdc50 .  This will preserve what you have on E: leaving the rest for F:.  This method allows skipping step 11

Simply boot with unlockx and lock the new drive and you are done.

Hope this makes it easier for some.

Just a note, but when i did this, i used a direct "dd" command, waited a long time, and then did the swap and it worked perfectly.  The command was just dd if=(old hdd) of=(new hdd) or maybe the other way around (it was a few weeks ago :-) )  Anyways, every fatx partition was copied perfectly, as well as the data (games and saves) albeit I had to format F: through a ftp session in order access all the extra space on my hdd.  Hope this helps someone in some way, these forums have helped me tremendously.

ok... so i have my original OEM HD in my xbox with PBL and evox installed using the fonts method. Can i just FTP my backup folder to my PC HD, then follow the steps given for restoring my backup to my new HD and just plug in and go? or will the PBL give me the wrong key for unlocking my OEM HD? I don't have a way of using any gamesave methods, i just used the hotswap trick. Can i upgrade my HD by just using the backup folder that evox creates?

I'm having problems with adding a new HDD. I unlocked the original XBox HDD with ConfigMagic, and then backed it all up with HDD Driver. I did the HDPrepera on the new Hard drive, and then added the BRFR thing at 0x600 and HDD Driver detected as an XBOX Hard drive. THen I restored the backup image of my original xbox HDD to the new hard drive.
Now how do I get the new Hard drive to work? I have the calculated passwords of both the original Xbox HDD and New HDD. I also have the password that ConfigMagic used to unlock the Original HDD.

I tried using UnlockX in dos with the original HDD in the secondary primary IDE, and it said the Original Xbox HDD was Not Lockable. I tried locking it anyways, with the Unlock key ConfigMagic used and it didn't work.

I haven't tried locking the new HDD with UnlockX yet, I just restored it with the backup of the Original XBox HDD.

The New HDD is a Maxtor 120gb ATA133 7200RPM 8mb
The Xbox HDD is a 10gb Seagate.

I have WinXP, and I'm using a WinME bootdisk to get into DOS.

Is there any reason why I'm not able to lock my original Xbox HDD? And how would I go about making my new HDD work in the XBOX?

Add ur HDD when locking on the first IDE channel.Take off all jumpers.Then IF not try jumper on master then cs.

If it was Frozen..It was Frozen with some kind of password.

If you used atapwd to lock it then try to unlock it from in there.I think it's either the master or user pass.
