A saturn emulator on Xbox will never happen unless you want to play games at 3fps.

And why is that exactly?

We have a great PSX emulator that can run a lot of games at full speed.

Plus, anything's possible.   wink.gif

Anything is possible except for Saturn emulation on the Xbox.

It is almost as bad as emulating a PS2 game on the Xbox. It will never happen.

Open source, close source, and banana source is not going to help either.

I wish this was not true but it is. You can blame saga for making it difficult to program for because of the CPU's.

There's half truth to there being no source code available for Saturn emus. It's true for functional emus (video functionality being the key) there isn't source code available, but a few that have probs emulating the VDP chips have the source available, such as Titan.

A new contest - except this time for Saturn - within a timeframe of say six weeks would accomplish absolutely nothing. You would have to give authors at least two years in order for them to make any kind of progress at all. The Saturn architecture is extremely complex and still largely unknown - hell, I can count the number of developers that mastered the Saturn hardware on one hand, and one of them is Sega itself - how can you expect budding hobbyists to build a playable emulator in such a short timeframe?

It's not so much that the hardware is too taxing for the Xbox (although the VDP units and parallel processors would certainly tax the 733Mhz processor), it's just that emulation authors wouldn't know where to begin.

...unless they had some help from the people that made the saturn emu for the pc.  It should be feasible, even though it would be difficult to get them to help out the xbox scene.  Still, money should be an incentive.

Ugh. It's just not feasable in the near future. Don't get my hopes up. I'd be willing to pay, if it offered serious advantages for running Saturn software... a high-res texture smoothed Virtual On would be a dream come true. happy.gif
Sadly though, the Saturn wasn't popular enough to give enough demand. I'm surprised enough people were that excited about the N64 emu...

Yeah as has been said before, it isn't that the saturn is too complex to emulate, there just isn't a good open source emulator for saturn yet.  Xbox can emulate the saturn.

The hardware isn't all that special...

Alright here is my opionion..

6Weeks?? umm you have to be crazy, first off all NOONE can make a Saturn Emulator that runs most saturn games at full fps in 6weeks.

Sega Saturn Emulators are very rare even for the pc, yes we have a Sega Saturn Emulator for the PC that supports just about every SS game at full FPS, however that emulator is NOT opensource and will never be due to the fact that it is licensed by Sega.

A Sega  Saturn emulator for Xbox IS possible, however if only 1 coder/team has got a good sega saturn emulator going, chances are we will never see a Sega Saturn emulator for Xbox.

End of Discussion.  wink.gif

A nice thought to play Saturn games, but to make any type of working emulator it would at least need a good year in development, and that's just a total crapshoot.  It took so long to get SNES emulation as far as it's gotten, so an inherently harder system like the Saturn would take much longer.  is there even enough proper documentation on all the components to help out, or does anyone who tries to make a Saturn emu work "blindly"?

But like Bleemcast, I wonder if it is possible and if so, how easy would it be to make game specific emulators, like for Virtual On, Nights, the Panzer Dragoon series, etc.  Basically all the BEST Saturn Games (even though I like a lot more than that, but hey, I want the best games to be playable before anything else).  I would LOVE to play Nights again in high res and with smooth textures.
