I've not seen a solution to the "replace DVD drive with hard drive" but i have often wondered if it was just set as a single FATX drive if it would work.

The file system for the DVD drive is UDF, and even if the HDD was formatted as such the HDD is not the DVD drive, so there would need to be some FPGA witchcraft done there. Possible? Yes. But practical? Not one bit, and considering it can take an SATA drive when using an IDE to SATA adapter and the LBA48 thing was cracked years ago, there really isn't a practical point in needing 2 HDDs.

Then how would you rip your games, practically speaking?

You're right, I'd forgot all about that crapX file system, was only thinking about the LBA48 bios, it's been awhile.

This is more of a try it and see what happens thing, as I don't recall seeing it tried before (though I'm sure it has been 1000 times already and years ago) and I'm expecting a 50/50 outcome. I haven't really touched an XBOX or original controller in years, though I have messed with the new X1 and DS4 controllers (Tact switch remapping) but my main tinkering project now is more retro related (older than the XBOX) working along with OzOnE who started and came up with the project.

It's been done before, I did some looking around. This discussion about another HDD got me thinking of storage alternatives, ie; using a CF in place of the HDD. Not as any kind of solution to the needing more than 2TB here with using multiple cards, as those things aren't near that big and are crazy expensive at 256gb, just as an alternative to the HDD for size and speed.

The older slower CF cards had issues booting, but the faster ones shouldn't.
