Cold Cathode Jewel Light
« on: April 10, 2004, 12:28:00 PM »

Alright lads, I'm going to go get an 80mm fan with a cc tomorrow, then I'm going to take off the cc and put it in my case. I read the tutorial, but it wasn't too clear on how to power the cc without soldering. I have a y splitter for a hdd power cable, now what I'd like to know is how would I use to to power the cc. Cheers for any help.
Also, would it look good in my crystal case? As I'm not sure what it'd really look like, seeing as I've only ever seen it doon to opaque cases.
One final question,  red or blue? (I have blue and red lights at the front)

you have to solder the wires from your cc inverter to the yellow (12volt) wire and the black (ground) on one of your y-slitter ends.  if for some reason you don't want to solder those two wires, just twist them together and tape it up.

ok cheers mate  , I don't mind soldering the wires, I just thought it said in the tut that if you use a y splitter you didn't have to solder. Still I haven't decided, red or blue?

Hey renegade,

The CC fan i bought from ebuyer.com had a molex connector attached. Simply plugged the hard drive power cable into it, then the extra connector into the back of the HDD, and it works fine - the inverter fits perfectly lengthways behind the DVD drive too. Go for blue! (red CC's look pink). One other thing, i take it you got some crystal controllers too - buy some ultra bright blue LED's and solder it so it faces vertically down behind the xbox logo.

Ok I couldn't get any pics of it on, but in case ya wanted to see, it's a pretty bog standard crystal box, only started to mod it last night and so far only done the front  power LEDs.
This is the top:

As I said, nothing too special...yet.

I wouldn't do blue, cause everyone, including me does blue... and red CC's look pink, so I'm not really telling you shit am I?

 blue it is then, after all I've never done a case mod, and my friends'll be impressed anyways, I doubt any of them have ever even used a soldering iron  . I've had a look at the controller mod, and that'll prolly be the first thing I do tomorrow, as I accidentally bought some 5V LEDs thinking they would be bright enough for the eject thingy, but weren't so I can do the controller mod without a resistor :D.
Plus it looks nice and easy.

Ok I got the controller LEDs done, and they look top, so cheers for that. I would have put in the cc for the jewel today, but Maplins is closed, as are most other stores, so that'll have to wait till tomorrow :(

I did purple, cause it was a pretty rogue color. I think my plexi box was going to have to be blue though, due to the abailability of blue/red Tricolor LEDs for power on/off and the LED on my default bios on my Xenium is blue. so thanks  for posting some blue/ clear pics guys. Makes it a little easier.

Ok this is my box sop far, so I just need to replace the left hand power LED and put my cold cathode in under the jewel. The red appears pink in the pic, but it is like a blood red. Sorry bout the poor quality, my cam doesn't like the dark.

actually come to think of it, I think I'll just make my power light one colour. Should I make it red or blue? Or any other colour suggestions?

DoA blue one? Never heard of it  . Maybe it's not out in the UK or summat, but I had a choice: Buy a bog standard box, 1 controller and 4 games for £160 or a crystal box, 2 clear 's' controllers and 4 games for £170, so you can see which I got.
