Which Xbox Hardrive Did You Choose?
« on: May 22, 2003, 01:28:00 AM »

Yeah i sold my old xbox because the DVDROM laser was wasted and now im gonna run it all of HD.

But, looking into which HD to choose from....

the Price difference from 80 to 120 gig is quite alot and its hard to get 120 gig of good xbox games so ill settle for 80 atm but i dont know which brand or speed right now.

Common seems to be the 80gig Seagate Barcuda 7200rpm.7 but hell those things are hot plates, so hot after running them for a while, that safe at all in the xbox?, so wot else is there, maxtor and Western Digital both have Drives at 80 gig and 5400rpm, they better?, 5400rpm seems way the hell to slow though, that scares me, so i do want a 7200rpm that is 80gig and one that i dont have to worry about in my 6th straight game of madden 2003 about console over heating problems. I want a Drive that is as quiet as can be also and im not considering any sorta heat plates or fans in my box..

any comments?, wotta u guys run?

cheers

i've got an 80gig barracuda in my box.
i'm too cheap to buy a bigger hd at the mo.
that thing gets so bloody hot i've made a passive water cooler to sit on the top of it which takes the heat down alot (although i have to change the water thrice a day)

5400rpm should not scare you. Get a Samsung 5400rpm 120gb HD. It is really quiet and it does not get hot at all. Plus you can get them for $95-$100. Not that expensive for good quality. Plus they are easily locked. I have thoroughly enjoyed the performance i have got from my Samsung.

I got a Samsung 120GB from ESystor (available here) and they're currently running $95 with free UPS ground shipping included.  It's a 5400rpm drive that runs quiet and cool.

DEVENIC, knows the good HD. That was where I ordered mine, and their service was great. Like i previously said, get the samsung, you won't be disappointed.

yea how much better is the 5400 than the 7200?  Can you make a difference.  Temp isn't an issue for me.  I have this really cool idea to settle that. so what are the differneces.  Also is it better to have a 2MB cache or a 5 MB., and why?

the difference b/t 5400 and 7200 is very slim, but the difference b/t 2mb and 8mb is big when it comes to copying games to the hard drive.
i did a test to find out what the difference was, so i took a maxtor 120 gb 7200 2mb and a maxtor 120gb 7200 8mb and copied the game ncaa basketball 2k3 to hem using px-hddloader 1.1a:

i got the following results:
2mb = approx.  25 min.
8mb = approx.  18 min

so, what i would look for is the increased mb rather than the rpm increase.
